Started for the first time this evening -on the hose.
After filling the fuel system with the primer bulb, it fired right up!
After clearing all the oil from the cyls it sounded good. Didn't want to rev it at all, but it felt really crisp on the throttle.
However there is a problem; I am having a hard time getting the reverse gear in. Gear cable is adjusted to maximum length, but it is still hard to get the reverse gear in when turning the prop by hand. I have never removed the lower unit before, but it feels like something was assembled wrong!? Usually I have about 10mm of threads left on the adjustment screw attached to the shift cable.
I must be doing some beginners mistake!?

    Think I cured it!
Pulled the lower unit, measured the distance between lower unit mating surface and center of the hole in the shift rod upper end. Fund some thread with the proper measurement(appx 55,7 mm). Rotated the shift rod until I reached the proper measurement, and now it works!

    Sorry...
"For a 20" (L) engine, the spec is 21-29/32" to 21-31/32". Midpoint of this is 557.212 mm for you metric system users. For a 25" (X) engine, the spec is 26-29/32" to 26-31/32", with the midpoint in metric being 684.212 mm. This distance is measured from the gearcase mating flange to the center of the shift rod attachment hole, with the gearcase in neutral."

I found this in a thread on the forum.

Boat in water and first tests made...
    Clearly alot moore power!
    idles perfect!
Cruised at appx 4000rpms, then stabbed the throttle; holy, what a punch!! Even my wife loved the sound.

Despite all this great news, Motor is still a bit lazy when stabbing the throttle going from idle, not really bogging, just don't feel like the mixture is optimal, it takes a few seconds and then, boom! I haven't yet engaged the primer to decide weather she's rich or starving for fuel. Currently running stock main jets (62D), mid range orfice #14, idle is richened from stock (#48) to #32.
I know that some of my recirc valves not are in optimal shape, perhaps some of them needs change, just don't feels like they would affect this condition to this extent!?

I will try to better the holeshot by creating a small gap between the cam roller and cam, in order to give it some more ignition advance on pickup. I don't really want to push hard because of the stock main jets.

Is it a pretty consistent rpm that it comes alive at?

Yes, but right now my tach isnt working properly.
The goal is to get it to pull hard directly when you touch the throttle!

Fingers, exh widened, all ports/block casting matched, rod slots, intakes, exh chest, drilled LU...running stock reeds for the moment. No changes in port durations!
    I agree on the jetting!
I haven't buried the throttle for more than 5-7sec, due to the risk of running lean. I have several jets of stock size, My intention is to drill them to .068 specs.

How much will main jetting affect take off?
Has anyone tried/felt the difference between good/bad recirc valves?

Drilling jets is not a good idea as a 62d is not .062 and a drill will also leave a swirl which effects flow. While jets are not cheap better than pistons. Port timing may be the same but you have added fingers clean up transfers, boost,
Changed exhaust shape any one of which can change jetting
