Leave those holes open that would not dry stack the engine, they are low speed exhaust holes and for your use needed. I would not dry stack for your application. If the old rings break coming out its not a big deal, I use the old rings to clean the grove.

The upper ones are easy, the lower ones on the other hand are badly stuck, how do I get rid of them without having to break the rings? How about cleaning -scotch brite? Diesel?
Funny thing is that all cyls had 100+ psi with all the lower rings totally stuck and a bad starter battery...
Heat the piston ring area with a torch...the ring will expand and will break itself loose....then clean the piston groove area.

    great thread!

Do you not have access to an automotive type machine shop? Any shop worth a Damn would have a honing cabinet simular to the
Sunnen CK-10 ( older) or the CK-77. they will leave the proper crosshatch for the best ring seal.
Sorry, but a good/reputable shop, wouldn't get caught dead with a DINGLEBERRY hone in the shop.

Only way to go. period !

I use a 320 grit flex hone... 2-3 light slow passes in and out, reverse drill, 2-3 more light slow passes in and out, move to next cylinder. I also have slotted finger ports, just like yours. Worked great for the cross hatch only.

    I'm not 100% sure, but I think that's a closed deck mod.

Recieved my 320grit flex hone today, I will take your advice and try the method you stated!

another thing; Stock Pistons, are they coated on top with some black coating? I figured they were just burnt, but it seems almost impossible to get rid of, even with oven cleaner and scotchbrite...
