    1989 Evinrude V-8 gear case

    Guys,

Take a look at this play in the gear case (video link) and let me know what I need to do to tighten it up or is this normal? I drained the lube and there wasn't anything on the magnets that wigged me out. The amount of wear metal looks normal to me but I'd appreciate any thoughts. Pay no attention to the cats fighting in the background at 0:11. My 6 pound cat thinks she is a lioness after dark!!!!

Holy hell! I thought mine were loose!

The material on the plugs is not bad for a old used case but the carrier play is crazy. They usually blow up before they are that loose (atleast v6 do). If it were mine the carrier would be tig welded to the case 360* around while I track down and convert a 1.62 merc sporty

Yeah I thought this was what I was going to hear. If you know of a 1.62 let me know. What is involved in the conversion?

It does have 660'ish hours on it.

There is a mod for these gearboxes. Four bolts with nuts through the side of the case and the carrier. Stops this from happening. Here is the text from my files.

HOW TO Pins Carrier Bearing on OMC GearBox.

Use 1" X 1/4" X 20 flat head bolts with flat washers inside unit and nylok nuts. This needs to be a preventative maintenance item as I have lost them.

#1, Is basic measurements. In a nut shell you're trying to center the bolts in the middle of the casting webbing of the carrier.

#2. Hole drilled with counter sink done also for the 1" flat head bolts.

#3. Counter sinking. I use the bolt head as the template. When it will go in hole bellow surface you're done.

#4 & #5. Drilling completed and holes painted to prevent corrosion.

#6. Is finished project from inside view.

    Hope this helps.

Great info and thank you for sending it over. Since there is quite a bit of play between the carrier and the case wouldn't you agree that I should use some SS shims to take up the space in between the two parts?

Hmmm. Having watched the video, that's a power of movement. Probably best to replace the gearbox with a good one and pin it from get go. There are others on here way more qualified than I to talk restoration rather than replacement.

From your video clip I think that hole is too loose. Find a tighter one with less hours on it

I would look for another lower unit , After I would look for a empty case and inner hub and move the guts in to it , or reseal the hub in the case and as was sugested weld the inner to the outer and you have a spare case when needed .

I have uesd a key way hone and honed the case round and installed a speedy sleeve on the carrier to take up the clearance. Put it together and 4 bolt it. I do not use SS bolts, I use grade 8 fine thread with locking nuts. Not Ni locks.
