I was under the impression that when the Super Strangler was introduced in 1972 that it did NOT have the 1" up and down lift. What year was that added?

More ego than corp politics. If you weren't part of Leeks team, you weren't really part of the race team. I didn't work for Leek, but was part of the rotary engine group.Clarence Blanchard was Jack Leeks designer. Later on he worked with Nerstrom. He was responsible for the first prototype V-6's that won Paris in 1974 and the darth vader look gear cases in the later 70's.

Can't really answer your question but the rotary had the same trim/lift unit from the get go in late 72.

I think the KR13 didnt have it
OMC lists the KR15 as being a 73 year model hence same ignition ( basically ) as a 73 135

I had a kr15 and yes it up/down and in/out. Bull had some of the pistons you were looking for with the high rings and no scallops. I just gave them away about two months ago. I wish I would have held on to my Weeks ccc, my rs, and my kr15 but times were tough.

    So let me understand:

    Easily 185 prop shaft horsepower
    7200 RPM
    15" midsection
Lower Unit that was better than a Sportmaster for hydrodynamics
    Full 20 degree power trim
A 1" built in power jack plate function
    258lbs total weight with pumps

Does your Super Strangler KR15 have both the power trim and the integrated 1" jack plate?

That would be very cool, thanks! The Super Strangler/Stinger GP 8 pumpers must have been mean mofos back in the day.

A general question for those of you who have run them and worked on them. Would a Super Strangler 8 pumper have the grunt to push a 16 foot 1500lb V hull to 84mph? No pad on the boat just round bottom V. I'm not good with what the lower units would have done as far as slip % and the like but I'm sure there is some math that could give a range.

John, The up/down was built into the mount system so not a merc unit they did not even have up down at the time. My memory of the trim is a pump very similar to merc but made by Prestolite who may have also made the merc unit. What I am saying is OMC did not go buy trim pumps from Merc.

You are correct, Merc did not have power lift at the time. What I said was OMC used 2 Merc Pumps. If my memory serves me right, they were made by Prestolite. They had a gear pump, a 12v motor and an integral reservoir with an 12v control vale to change fluid flow directions. OMC's lift was integrated into the swivel bracket. really a very simple piston on the swivel bracket rod, seals on both ends and inlet-outlet on both ends. I'm not sure OMC even used the Merc trim cylinder on their units. I just don't remember anymore. That's why I designed the single pump/motor unit with a single reservoir. It took a bunch of weight out of the boat and simplified to electrical/hydraulic systems.

The power lift was not a movable jack plat as we know it today. The swivel bracket moved up and down 1". The mount to the boat was fixed.
