The gearcase in the photo is the "clubfoot" or standard gearcase for the KR-15m. It used a 15-spline propshaft, left hand rotation, forward only, 14:23 gear ratio. Props for this were left-hand 13x23, 13x25 cleavers. I have a few of these for it, worked by Don Henrich. I also have a brand-new sprint gearcase, which was optional for this engine and available as an accessory. It also used a left-hand rotation, but 1:1 gearing, using much smaller propellers-10x16, 10x17 typically. As for the Doc Jones stacks, I don't really think they'd add much, if anything. The KR had a factory tuned exhaust pipe that was air cooled with cooling fins (much like the cylinders and heads on a free-air cooled snowmobile or motorcycle engine). The megaphone was carefully tuned (as much as one can be without using converging/diverging cones) for this engine as well, with a specific length, diameter and taper. I doubt the stacks would be worth more than a couple horsepower.

No, forward gear only. The KC13r and KR15m did not come with shifting gearcases.

Here are some pics on my mod V-4 with Super Strangler parts. It had KR-15 cylinder heads and pistons. Cranking compression was 190 PSI. It was on a 16' Action Marine, spun a 30" cleaver 7200 RPM. Porting and exhaust system by Monty (the early years!) The Monty mods added 14 mph on top end. Radar gun read 92 mph. Like you guys have said, it was the coolest sounding engine I've ever owned.

Very cool! Is that a Super Strangler lower unit picture you have there action1923? Was 7,200 RPM the tops a KR15 Super Strangler would run back in 1975?

No, the gearcase is a modified stock lower unit. 7200 was what the 30' cleaver turned. A typical KR15 was capable of quite a bit more RPM!

An 8 pumper Super Strangler KR15 ran best at more than 7,200 RPM? I'm not seeing that. What was WOT?

I'm not sure, but I think the recommended RPM range was 6800-7200.

I used to have a kc13r that had only 10 gal of gas through it since new---bought it from the orig owner who raced in the 70's (it was a back-up motor)
Wish I still had that thing---Never even fired it up once.
Still have a brand new never used l/h 13x25p cleaver --- if someone needs it !
