Markus, can you find me a 2007 Volvo V70 R AWD Wagon to tow with and ship it over? Those suckers are impossible to come by over here!

There seem to be a few in Germany:

Markus, that's the "technical" reason. The "marketing" reason is that since the boom in SUV and truck sales began in the mid-1990s, the US auto manufacturers have been discouraging us from towing with cars. The tow ratings on larger US cars that were previously popular tow vehicles (Ford LTD/Crown Victoria, GM Caprice/Roadmaster, etc.) were downgraded from 5000 lbs. (typically) to 2000 lbs. in the 1996-98 timeframe. That was the end of any serious towing with cars in the US.

Very cool Marcus. The V70 "R" AWD Wagon is very versatile while being a barn burner in disguise. You must find a 2006 or 2007 model year though as they have a much stronger 6 speed tranny. They can tow 3500lbs no problem, and can seat 7 if you find the rear facing jumper seat option. Volvo should never have stopped making it IMO.

The Aussies have their car towing stuff down pat. The 04-06 Pontiac GTOs(Holden Monaro) had a brace under the rear of the car that a hitch could be mounted to and Holden had a 3500 lb rating capacity for it. Pontiac simply stated the car wasn't designed to tow anything. The Holden Commodore (Pontiac G8) was rated for 3500 lbs with trailer brakes and 1500 or 2000 without.

I know it's not new but I towed with a 1996 Cadillac Fleetwood for a few years. With the 16' Checkmate Enticer I was able to get 24 mpg driving 65 mph. With the 21' Checkmate Pulsare I often drove in 3rd gear and mileage dropped to about 15 mpg. All the 1994 - 1996 Fleetwoods can tow 5,000 pounds and there are a few that can tow 7,000 (RPO Code V4P) with a weight distribution hitch. I think the car looks a little ridiculous but its comfortable on trips, huge inside and has a massive trunk for all my boating crap. Just food for thought.

Im putting a hitch on my 300 hemi. Have no doubt it will pull my Allison with ease. Crown vics , Cadillac DTS, anything v8 or big V6 should have no trouble. I always thought a Dodge Magnum make a sharp tow car.
