    Cars that can tow Boats

Does anybody still make car that can pull a Boat say under 18'? I have a Hydrostream Viking and that was no problem for the 1999 Cadillac Seville. But the 17' Whaler was a problem in hot weather. New radiator didn't help.My old 1994 Lincoln(200,000 miles plus) could pull every thing with no problem. But does anybody still build cars that can.Trailer Boat Magazine use to have rates on cars but no more. And I just do not like trucks for every day use.(they suck for gas mileage)

Volvos have the highest tow ratings for cars. 2200 lb for the small cars, 3300 for the larger cars. Chrysler 300 and its sister cars were rated at 3000, but dropped to 2000 in the refresh a couple of years ago.

Remember a few years back staying at KonTiki in Islamorada and a 24 Skater came rolling in behind a Crown Vic. Think he came from the Orlando area.

A crown Vic would be the newest car that can tow some substantial weight 5k lbs if I recall. Everything else will only be rated for a couple thousand lbs.

I had a grand marquis that pulled great. I had to add air shocks to the rear to hold the back up only issue I had. I had a 2.73 gear ratio so I had to tow with overdrive off when I had 3 large four wheelers behind it. If you find a car that has a good gear ratio and tranny cooler you can drag some weight

Thats great! I tow my 13' boat on a steel trailer with a Suzuki SX4 with no problems at all. My boat on a steel trailer weighs more than the Quartershot above on an aluminum trailer. I just towed it from SW FL to Tennessee and back averaging 22mpg at 75mph. The car is front wheel or four wheel drive so if you need extra traction on a ramp you have it at the push of a button. My other tow vehicle is a Hummer H2 so I am no tree hugger but the Suzuki does bring a little balance to our fuel consumption. I get about 12mpg towing with the H2.
PS. The Suzuki is one of the best cars I have ever owned. Its been flawless and has a torquey little 2.0 liter 4 cylinder.

    94-96 Fleetwood.

The 7,000 lb (3,200 kg) trailer towing package was made available 1993, something not seen in a production sedan since the 1971–1976 Cadillac Sixty Special[citation needed]. The RPO V4P package included heavy duty cooling (RPO V08, which consisted of a seven-blade mechanical fan and an extra capacity radiator), RPO FE2 Suspension System Ride Handling, HD 4L60 transmission, RPO KC4 Cooling System Engine Oil, RPO KD1 Cooling System Transmission Oil, RPO KG9 140 amp alternator, and RPO GT4 3.73 gears with an 8.5-inch ring gear. In 1994–1996, the V4P package was revised with RPO GU6 3.42 gears with the new more powerful RPO LT1 260 horsepower (190 kW) V8, and HD 4L60E transmission with unique accumulators to shift smoother with the shorter rear axle gearing.
    There you go.
    boatless and hopeless.

New cars with rated limits high enough to tow an 18 foot boat are few. Most new cars are zero or 1000 lb. There are a few at 2000 lb, which is a bit low.

    I looked up Volvo again
Volvo S80,0 S60 ,V60, are all rated for 3300 lb
Volvo C30 and C70 are rate for 2000 lb, a bit light for my 16 Baja or 20 Ally

So far we still have my Miata and my wife's Pontiac Vibe (1500 rated). Not enough for either boat, so they stay on lifts.
