150 Merc Timing Question
I bought and rebuilt a 1987 150 merc XR2 powerhead .to replace a trashed powerhead on my 1987 merc 150 outboard. I'm almost ready to put it in the water and fire it up, but, I've got a couple questions about setting the timing. The spec for max spark advance timing for my old outboard is 16 degrees BTDC, 18 degrees BTDC at cranking speed. The spec for the XR2 block is 20 degrees max spark advance, 22 degrees BTDC. Which timing spec should I be using? Also, I had a burned wire on the spark advance module on the motor and I couldn't find a replacement part number for the module, so, I removed it. Is there anything special that needs to be done to compensate for that? I'd really appreciate some input on these questions, I'm pretty new to this type of thing, and I'm kind of stuck until I can get some answers.

Use the spec that matches the powerhead you rebuilt.

Thanks! That's what we used to set the timing, but, wanted a sanity check before I tried to fire it up. I've been looking on the forums, and it doesn't look like removing the spark advance module should be much of an issue. Thanks again.
