do you think i could run a pair of rude 200s on an 18ft manta?
i bought a pair of 99 rude 200s with al rigging and 153 hours for 5k last week, looking for something intersting to put them on. i came across an clean 1980 18ft manta that has a 1980 merc 140 on it... the boat has a notched transom for the o/b, i was thinking i could fabricate a transom bracket to hold my twin 200s. this looks like a splash of a dinzi 18, which came with a sb chevy and volve 280, which i figure weigh about the same as a pair of 200s... pls let me know what you think, thx, rm

Entirely too much hardware for that little boat, for about a dozen different reasons.

please elaborate... it looks like a donzi 18 splash. they come with 300hp sb chevys and a volvo 280 out drive. i know of a guy with about a 1000 ponies in an 18ft donzi with an arneson surface drive... why is twin 200s too much? the weight? i would think twins go straight on re entry after catching some air, i know a guy running 780hp single i/o and it gets squirly when there is not much boat in the water. please explain your thinking...thx, rm

Not just the amount of weight, the location of it. The car motah is inside the boat, the outboards are hanging off the back.

rigging a twin doesn't put the props and drives in the optimal spot for performance. it would only be better if a single engine of sufficient hp wasn't available, and it certainly is these days. a single 250hp would likely be as fast and handle superior on an 18' hull! I have a 21challenger with twin 225 2.4's and it's at it's limit for stern weight with the jackplate! I just couldn't see an 18' hull handling it without landing vertical and tripping after a wave launch!what is the beam on your hull,I thought the Donzi was built narrower than the challenger,so displacement may be reduced considerably!

You can't compare a single inboard with a sterndrive to twin outboards. One word - Balance!

i have the pair of rude 200s is the only reason i was contemplating this, that and the fact the boat has a 140 merc inline on it... my buddy is giving me a real low hour 225 rude for it...so that's the ticket providing i can work a deal on it...
thx for your replies, rm

I say do it, fux what everyone else says. The best that could happen is it runs like a scalded ass dog and scares the **** out of you. The worst that could happen is it handles like ass and you have a spare engine to sell. Not like twins on a little boat is anything new, Frostman and RRevinrude were doing it when many of us were still chittin yellow.
