    Yamaha 05, 225hp.

I have just sold a clients boat, a 22ft glass hard top fish/cruiser with a 2005, Yamaha 225hp 4 stroke engine done 360 hours. The boat and the engine was mint, the previous owner had really looked after this boat. In the life to date for the engine it had had the power head removed to replace the exhaust megaphone (a recognised problem with this engine) ( dealer supplied megaphone and client paid labour) and it had all required services done and on due date.

So doing the deal and about to deliver when we find over night oil had leaked out and puddled under the engine. Guess what, lower crank shaft seal. Have to remove the lower and then the power head to replace crank seal.

Unfortunately I don't have all the receipts to date, to hand, they are on the boat but I can say that for the 360 hours and given this engine had been very well looked after, the owner sure has had to spend a lot of money for both service and repairs post purchase.

Sure does make the Etecs look better and better.

the crankshaft seal leak at the oil pump is a long known problem with the F200-225 engine, even before the exhaust components corrosion. In fact, when the powerheads were pulled to fix the oil leak, the corrosion under the powerhead became evident.

Yamaha dealers have a 4 page service bulletin from 2008 describing how to re-sleeve the crankshaft and replace the oil pump and seals.

Thanks for the information. So would best business practice suggest that when doing the exhaust megaphone that one should sort the potential crankshaft seal failure at the same time??????

The oil pump and crankshaft seal should always be replaced if the powerhead is removed - if it has not been done before.
