300XS Revised parts???
So I have a 300XS manufactured in DEC 2008 and I'm trying to figure out if any of the problem parts were
already upgraded.
The compressor is 8M0001258 made in Mexico
The coils are 3057 879984 Rev E
The coil harness is 8M300247 Rev B
Are all of these the problem parts that mother Merc has now revised with new versions? I looked at the BAM merc online catalog by my part numbers didn't match anything they listed as original or revised parts.1998 22' Scarab 7.4 liter Merc (bought another one)(And gone again)

Since the compressor says "Made in Mexico" I think it's probably the old style but I don't know for certain.
And I believe the new coil harnesses have multiple hold down clamps whereas mine only has one so I think it's the old style too.
But I'm not certain about them and I have NO idea about the coils.
But at this point I'm just talking with myself.1998 22' Scarab 7.4 liter Merc (bought another one)(And gone again)

I'm interested in any responses. A friend of mine is telling me that the 2014 versions are supposed to have an improved compressor that gives the 300XS another 17hp. I really think someone is feeding him a line of crap, but I haven't found anything to disprove this either.

The new style compressor started coming on the late year 2011 engines with serial numbers later than 1B885480. The new compressors are black.
And I think 17 HP gain is exactly what you say it is .... I call BS also
The 2014 actually met new emission standards coming, so everything I am hearing is a loss of HP of appx 6 ponies on a 3.2L

When I replaced the coil harness on my 07 the new one came with multiple hold down clamps while the original and first replacement only had I believe 1 clamp.

I know mine didn't originally come with the new style compressor, but I was trying to figure out if the original owner might have changed it before I dropped the dough on a new one. I don't really like the idea of driving around with a potential problem. But mine is not black so it looks like it's not been changed. Thanks for the info.

After looking at the parts diagram, I decided that whatever harness mine has, it's not the latest one, so I bought the new design and replaced mine just a couple of days ago.
Now I just wish I knew how to figure out whether or not my coils are original and if they are, I heard a rumor that the service bulletin might address updating an out of warranty motor's coils at something other than full price. But I don't know much else and the dealers around me don't even want to talk about big motors. Thanks for the info.1998 22' Scarab 7.4 liter Merc (bought another one)(And gone again)

I was told today that Mercury is changing all their part numbers to start with "8M". The part I bought today looked identical to the original, but the PN started with "8M".

Yea, no "R" on the part number, but the parts listed by Merc in their online catalog for the new 300XS motors didn't seem to have an R either. That's what was confusing me. So do you know what the entire part number is for your coils? Did they just ad an R to the old number?1998 22' Scarab 7.4 liter Merc (bought another one)(And gone again)

The new compressor is NOT made in Mexico so you will not have that on the tag.
I have a new style compressor but it is not black, it looks just like the old one. It is supposed to have two bearings in the top cap instead of one.
You should be servicing your strainer as well:

Good info on the compressor. Thanks, Demeanor.
Now I'm certain mine is the old one and not knowing what the actual failure rate of the old ones are, I feel like I'm on borrowed time.
As to the strainer... I do take care of that. Last time, mine only looked a little more dirty than yours but after cleaning and flushing the system, my head temp ran 15 degrees cooler.1998 22' Scarab 7.4 liter Merc (bought another one)(And gone again)
