What years were 2.4 & 2.5 blocks built by Mercury?

I need a history lesson.....trying to settle an argument. What years were the 2.4 made, and when did they switch to 2.5?

    Thanks.......

Thanks Chris! But I guess I just lost the argument......our newly acquired Mariner Mag II is a '91. My dad looked up a voltage regulator by serial # on marineparts.com, which said it was for a 2.5 liter. I thought this motor was a 2.4 liter. Got it running correctly today by replacing both switch boxes, but tach is still jumping around & it's not charging. The voltage regulator (danged water-cooled.....$$$) didn't ohm right, so now we've got to decide if we want to buy a new water-cooled one, or change the stator & go to a dual regulator system.

Thanks! I don't remember the exact part # on this one, but I do know it ends in A13....I'll talk to him & get in touch with you. What's your phone number?

Chris, I went over & did some more trouble-shooting today. The stator is fine & so is the reg/rectifier. I pulled the main wiring plug apart & spread all the pins, put it back together, & tach is working perfectly. It's putting a steady 13.3 volts to the battery at idle, too, so it appears to be charging correctly. Thanks for the help! If/when I DO need a reg/rec, I'll give you a call!

I'd still like to know which block this is. How can I tell if this is a 2.4, 2.4 Fatblock, or a 2.5?

'91 Mag II is a 2.4 fat block. Same as XR4 water cooled reg and all. '91 was a "stupid year" with a mixture of 2.0, 2.4 and 2.5 blocks that all looked tha same with exception of tha 200 2.5. 7 petal front..............Was most definitely tha last year of tha 2.4 even if it "looked like" a 2.5.......

If it'a a '91 fatblock, pulling the heads is the best way to see if it's a 2.4 or 2.5. 2.4 fat block and 2.5's have dowel pins to align the heads..... 2.4 cylinder has a bore of 3 3/8" and the 2.5 is 3 1/2", from the outside, they look the same .... there was a thread on here not too long ago where someone sold a 2.4 fatblock as a 2.5, they are easy to mix up.........

OK, thanks! That's the reply I was looking for. Now the obvious question: What gave the fat block its name? 2.4 block with bigger bores, or what?!

You were typing while I was.....we had to put one head on it when we got it. Had a crack (actually a casting flaw) that was letting water into one cylinder. It definitely had dowels, but I didn't measure the bores. You have, however, told me how to tell for sure, so thanks!
