2.4 Mercury Running Hot
I ve just put together a 175hp 2.4 Mercury 1988.
Runs sweet but its getting hot at idle.. New pump, new thermostats, poppet serviced.
I think I messed up with the adapter plate... Its a 2 piece plate, but on the top half, I used a later type with the mount for the later model cowls...
It seems to be blowing way too much water out of the exhaust reliefs and not cooling the top 2 cylinders properly...
Wanted to see what you guys that have had more experience with these things think before i pulled the powerhead again...
Is this just a case of mismatched adapter halves?? Or is my problem elsewhwere??

I thnk your on the right track. can't mix the old style botom and new style top of the two piece adapter. really need to have the 2 pc adapter and can all match. you can drill & tap the old style top adapter plate to mount the bracket for the late model cowls.

Check your low speed timing setting. They get hot at idle if it is not correct. Just my 2 cts.....

You can definitely NOT mix the plates. We accidently did it a couple years ago and had the same issues you are having. Massive amounts of water coming out of the exhasut relief. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies... I though that would of been the issue..
Thats exactly what I had, heaps of water gushing out of those reliefs... I guess I gotta get her back under the hoist....
