2.4L Bridgeport Mod-VP - won't turn more than 2000 RPM. Help!
I'm helping out a freind by doing some work on his new boat (LTV copy). The motor is an '86 2.4L bridgeport Mod-VP. The heads were changed 20 years ago to stock bridgeport ones so it was more user friendly.
First problem - blowing fuel out the bottom carb and running like ****. Wouldn't pull past 2000 RPM. Looked through the carbs and saw a broken reed - CCM hooked us up. No change in performance yet.
Second problem - spark on only 4 cyclinders. Did some testing with the switchboxes and determined they were on their way out - replaced with new ones. Runs on 6 now - still won't pull past 2000 RPM. It doesn't die or shut off... just stops increasing RPM at 2k, if you floor it she just bogs.
- Checked fuel pressure - 7psi (a tad high i know - I'm going to turn it down to 5psi)
- Checked carb jets for blockage
- Timing is 24-25° at full throttle and linkage moves freely
- Compression is 135psi accross all holes
I'm thinking stator. I'm picking up a good used one tonight to give it at try. I don't know these motors; does this sound about right? If this doesn't work I'm going to look further into the carbs.

^what they said^
Stumbling under load and not pulling over 2000 is the classic symptom of a stator with a bad high-speed winding.'89 Hydrostream Vegas XT, '90 Merc 2.4 Bridgeport PCU EFI

If the bottom carb it shooting fuel out the front tear it apart.
double check to make sure the floats are levelled and that the needle seats are screwed in tight.
I had similar issues on my old 2.4 and it turned out to be a fuel issue with the WH20 carbs.

Thanks for the input guys.
I picked up a good used stator from our local performance outboard shop last night and installed it. Upon removing the old one I noticed the old wireing was dryed out and the rubber had cracked off the yellow wires. They are in a location such that they could have even been grounding out on the block. The motor fired right up and sounded very crisp on the hose. My buddy is coming by tonight and we're going to see if his boat will finally perform as it should. fingers crossed!

She works!
It was the stator! Thanks for the input guys. She ran great and my buddy was thrilled/terrified when we hit 84 mph @ 6500 the first time out with it.

Should turn at least 7000 once he changes his shorts and gives it another go.

The motor is running like new now; he has had it out about 10 times already! Its running into the 80's every time out with a best so far of 85.5 GPS @ 6500 turning a 26 chopper. He has sent his prop in to have some work done to try to get the revs up, in the meantime the prop shop has loaned him a 24 to try. It just occurred to me that his factory carbs have mounting holes for an airbox or something. Yet his motor just has bare carbs. Do these motors have factory velocity stacks? If so is it worth trying to track some down?

Something is still wrong. My de-tuned Bridgeport can turn a 26 pitch to 7700 RPM on a heavier boat.

"Do these motors have factory velocity stacks? If so is it worth trying to track some down?"
2.4 MOD VP motors came with velocity stacks. I have same motor. I removed the stacks with no ill effects.
