The answer to the original question is very simple. Mercury built the 1987 XR 2 for only one year1987!
They did build a 175 hp rated engine that was a 2.0 cc engine and they did build a 175 hp rated engine that was a larger bore (2.4?). What Mercury says on their cowlings and what the engine actually produces is probably quite different IMO. I do believe that Mercury built the XR 2 for more years than 1987. Any legitimate Merc dealer or Guru should be able to answer your question straight up as in "WHAT YEARS DID MERCURY MANUFACTURE XR 2 ENGINES FOR SALE IN THE U.S.?

The 2.0L 150 XR2 came out in 1985. It was the only motor in the line-up that had gray stripes instead of brown that year. They continued building it in 1986 and 1987.

In 1988 it was replaced by the 2.4L 150 XR4.
