Progression or Superboat?

Ok, folks. Now that the “Superboat or Kryptonite” thread is way out of hand, here an update on my buying decision.

Needs: A fast boat (80 mph) for big water (ocean). I/O. Extra points for handling in the rough.
Engine: Leaning towards HP525
Limiting factors: Not larger than 30ft (max for my dock.)
Not needed: Cabin nonsense such as galley, head.
Budget: 70K – 100K
Builder: Extra points for Long Island sourced.

Basically a F1 boat.

So far, I have narrowed my search down to a dead heat between Progression 29 and Superboat Y2K, with Kryptonite 27 as the runner-up. Kryptonite 29 would be in the race if it would be a true 29, and not a 27 with a swim platform. I haven’t looked at any of them, but will visit all three at their factories next week. I will have to make a decision ASAP.

My impressions so far (all virtual, hands-on impressions coming up):

Progression plusses: Quality, warranty, personalized service (Kevin), re-sale value.
Progression minuses: Slightly dated look (boxy). Price.

Superboat plusses: Narrower beam (7ft). True 30ft. Price. Looks. The Admiral likes it better than the Progression. I like the F16 canopies.
Superboat minuses: Quality. Re-sale.

Now I’m at a point where the Progression owners say Progression is the greatest thing on earth, and Superboat is hell. And the Superboat owners say v.v. I don't blame either of 'em. Once I've made a decision, I'll defend it to the bitter end.

Greg, who’s experience I value, sent me a ringing endorsement for Progression.

Jim Capie of Jesse James fame sent me a pretty convincing message: “I took several rides and did a lot of research. I really liked the Kryptonite and I think it is a slightly faster hull than both the 30y2k or the progression in calm water. I am from Babylon and also have ridden in many Progressions. I found that the Superboat, in my humble opinion, was a far better and faster ride in big water .The narrow beam and true 30ft with the small step seems to work really well in big water. I like the ocean and love big water.”

If there are any Superboat or Progression owners out there, please feel free to chime in. This really is about big water boats. When commenting about quality, please keep it to current production. Jerry, you had your point, I understand that Superboat is made by aliens. This is not an investment for life, knowing me, I’ll probably own it for 5 years.

Yep. I'll see it tomorrow in Hampton Bays. I'm also talking to Eddie Simmons about his 30Y2K. He's willing to drop a new HP525 into the hull. Attractive offer. 69K ask for the total.

All those boats your looking at evenly powerd with drivers of equal ability will run pretty close. Buy what you like best execpt I personially dont care for Superboats. good luck. Oyeah Kryptos arent streached Super boats, different hull alltogether.

I have opinions on both........the progressions contruction seems to be impececable and attention to detail is outstanding and I havent heard of too many hull failures on the street. Minuses is the boxy lines which I really dont mind.......other minuses is the exageration of capable speeds claimed by the factory(but this was what I heard way back when they first started building boats) but it did irratate me quite a bit when a manuf exaggerates to the unbelievable extent, maybe things have changed today.

Superboat has also very good construction, maybe not to the detail of the progression but enough to keep together. John has been building boats for a zillion years and know what works and what doesnt. The 30 is somewhat of a stretched 21.......so what!.....the hull is outstanding.......did you realize that the linderer design 21 was also shared with the 30 shadow cat(chine and strake dimensions). So, I dont see the stretchin history a minus........its a dam good design.......minuses, in looking at the 21's there construction was balsa cored with the execption of the sides above the waterline(I may not be too accurate here) but what happens and has happened is if you slightly stuff a boat
hydralics cave the sides of the boat in and the deck becomes detatched from the sides causing catastrophic failure with the deck and hull.........but that was back in 88 and I think John has corrected that problem.........

Go with the superboat..........the name is too cool.......

Why don't you give us some examples. As for the 24 being a stretched 21 your just showing how ignorant you are.Have you even seen one in real life or just pictures. And buying something because it has a TOO COOL OF A NAME. yeah that makes a lot of sense

This is what Kevin @ Progression quoted for speed:

"27 will run between 78 to 83 Mph with an HP 500.
29 will run between 74 to 79 Mph with an HP 500.
The above speeds are calculated with 30 gals of fuel and 2
persons. It also depends on weather, the boats setup and options included."
