Thanks to requirements from our friends in Washington and California, Mercury Racing (and our parent, Mercury) changed outboard focus to OptiMax direct injected two-strokes and Verado four-strokes. Exhaust emissions are the new reality; we have no choice. We cannot comply with US law using light, simple EFI two-strokes. That said, we’ve produced some amazing, emissions compliant outboards: the 200XS makes a very aggressive tunnel boat engine – it’s not an F-1, but it is much more reliable and cleaner. We made some very high performance 150, 175 and 200 OptiMax engines on 15 inch housings, but sold too few to justify keeping them in the offering. (Lost money on that line-up! Not good for staying in business.) All the highly successful ProXS OptiMax engines were derived from Mercury Racing XS’s. The 350SCi Verado is a powerhouse, but too heavy for anything but offshore center consoles, bay boats and higher-flotation flats boats.

These are all great engines, but they are not the light, screaming two-strokes of our youth. Those are gone. Talk about timing: my pc screen saver just popped up with a picture of my dog and me, boating in 1957, with a screaming two-stroke! So S+F, I guess we’re left with good memories and future challenges.

All I have to say is what I think Fred Kiekhaefer was thinking as he wrote that.
I hate Liberals and Socialists. Nothing they try to fix gets fixed. Most of it isn't even broken in the first place, and the unintended consequences of their actions are killing us.

Some info on Nordic's construction ..........

Nordic Boats is committed to using the most advanced technology and progressive hull designs. We utilize revolutionary engineering and break through ideas in the performance boat industry daily. It is a commitment we’ve honored since 1962. We are dedicated to building the best boats with speed, power and control in mind. Nordic Boats process and manufacturing techniques employ some of the most sophisticated procedures in the world—from our CNC composites shop to our innovative aerodynamic and hydrodynamic race testing. All Nordic boats are built with 100 percent wood-free, closed cell composite construction, foam coring, vinylester resins and all the finest materials. It all comes together and gives you the best product our expert team of craftsmen can produce. Wood-free construction translates into a stronger yet lighter and faster, more fuel efficient boat for your money. Choose standard, sport, or full race (Kevlar & Carbon) lay-ups with vacuum bag lamination technology. Contact us to learn how these high-tech techniques come together to help Nordic Boats consistently build better and faster boats.

From a knowledgeable source on Nordic boats............."Nordic Racing has developed a system of "modular" lifting strakes on an SR-21. They are making adjustments right at the ramp in 15 inch segments of the boat to try and squeeze some more speed and add stability. Pretty bitchen stuff. They are experimenting with other facets of the setups as well. Nordic puts A LOT of R&D, and time and especially $$ into their racing program."

And a great pic far right (albeit I/O) of a 2013 Nordic 21's transom and pad just now being built. The quality on these hulls is amazing.

You can still get a 2.5 liter 280hp ROS brand new if you want. Mercury Racing still builds and sells them even today. The market for them is simply not there.

It is my understanding that you can still get complete engines from Mercury Racing. (2.5 liter ROS, S3000, Drag). They are intended for racing purposes only and not advertised but are available. No warranty but you can still buy them.
