Thanks RobF, a little info on coring and balsa ...............
In an effort to build a stronger, lighter hull, builders began constructing hulls with a cored material sandwiched between layers of fiberglass. While more labor intensive, the end product is alighter and stiffer hull. There are anumber of material used for coring, including end grain balsa, Airex and Divinycell. In addition, plywood may be used in transoms, as well as in decks on boats of any length. End grain balsa has the advantage of being very light and stiff, but can absorb water if not completely sealed. Airex is a synthetic, also light, but more flexible. Divinycell, also a synthetic, is stiffer than Airex. Both synthetics are less prone to absorbing water. Plywood, while not as light, is stiff and gives light fiberglass sections an increased load carrying capacity, but it is also susceptible to absorption.Cored materials have been used successfully for a number of years. Generally, coring is not found in boats until the mid-30 ft.range. There may be a few exotic species for racing that do, but the vast majority of the smaller boats on Lake Superior and elsewhere simply aren'tcored. A method of checking for a cored material is by tapping the hull with a small plastic hammer. As the hammer (lightly) strikes the fiberglass hull, a clear, crisp report should be heard. If the report is dull and sounds like a watermelon, there may cored material that is wet. A hammer will not definitively tell you there is core material, but it will aid in finding wet and/or delaminated core.

Hey guys, this has been an awesome thread really been enjoying reading through all this, deff a lot of info here. My Velocity has a stock Merc 300x ran 93 with a 27 Hydromotive, not sure exactly on rpm because I'm always so focused on gps I forget to look lol and then always beat my self up about it later. Got this speed on a lake also so no BS tide #'s from me. Haven't had a chance to do to much prop testing, really just been running it with the hydromotive, once I get my hands on a pro et I expect to see quite a bit more out of it. Can't wait to see what it will do.

I got some additional feedback that the Merc 525 I/O Sutphen 21 that you mentioned your friend now has in stock was actually built with an extra layer of glass and an extra bulkhead. I don't know what that translates into in terms of added weight (another 150lbs?) over a standard layup, but it makes a top speed of 93 that much more impressive.

Superbender, are you talking about the Kryptonite 23 pictured below? Is this a 2005 and the only 23 Kryptonite built?
