Balsa core doesn't have that. And I might add, balsa is more likely to fail in shear (with the grain) than plywood when really beat on for similar reasons. Make sense? But, balsa is much lighter than plywood no matter what you do with it. Tom
An interesting piece I ran across about the Sutphen 21.........

While Rich Jr. builds the boat, he’s getting some help from outside sources on the higher end paint jobs, and Premier Performance Interiors of Bradenton, Fla., is doing the interiors. Sutphens were paticularly popular in the Northeast and still have a loyal following in the area. Typical for Rich Jr., he’s taking no short cuts with the new 21. While most builders lay up their boats with resin that’s 80 percent vinylester, he wants 100 percent. Most boats are built with balsa or foam coring, but he uses actual marine plywood to core his boats’ bottoms, even the 21, because it’s stiffer and makes the boat stronger. When I was a kid we used to use a lot of balsa for the bottom core, and we had some failures,” he explained. “You stick with what works." He said that even on future models, he doesn’t ever expect to see a stepped Sutphen. “I can see messing around with steps on race boats,” he said. “I’m third generation and that’s the one thing that’s different,” he said. “There are very few guys who are willing to put their name on the boat. It takes things to a deeper level. I have a lot of pride in my name and respect for my father and grandfather and things that they did." And it shows in his boats.

JamesGang; Tux, will Velocity still build with the old style deck if someone wanted one. I think it would be a good option, all the car manufacturers went retro.

No, only new style. The only options are light (kevlar) or regular layup. I always liked the old school look.

can anyone make claim on this one as far as speed, ride quality, if it's actually a hustler designed hull and not someone else's, price, etc. seems like a nice ride with a lot of engine packages too.
