My Bernico hull weighs around 550lb. Vacuum epoxy layup with Divinicell foam core & stringers. No floor and an 80litre bladder tank. It set the 103 record with a 2.5 Merc, and was then rigged and raced with a 130 V4 yam in a 1.8litre class. It was perfectly balanced with no ballast at all, with only a few mph difference whether flat or calm (low 60s). Since I've put the 'Rude on it we've been working on adding ballast to get the balance back. The great thing about a light hull is that small amounts of weight strategically placed make a huge difference. Still in the testing and set up stage (currently in the middle of a horrendously windy winter here) but I'm confident we can get it running as well in the rough as hulls that are twice the weight. I've been out in some pretty nasty stuff and have never once had it pointed at the sky, the main issue we have is the weight of the powerhead in comparison to the little yam. I've only added around 50lb down low so far and it's made a huge difference, it's just going to take a little trial and error to get it spot on.

Your Progression 22 only weights 950? Wow, Then I'm running a 'Heavy' boat comparatively at 960.

Everything moves on, hull design, materials, engines, propellers. Too many people just seem to assume you can throw power at something and go fast. True to a certain degree, but not if you want to run fast consistently in varying conditions.

The long island gang out to take a road trip to the Toronto boat show to see the Tuff and meet Mark.

The show starts Jan 12. It's about a 9 hour drive.

Several guys on the West Coast are running Bernico hulls. They use them for ski racing to Catalina which can get very rough. I think that both Tuff and Bernico deserve serious kudos for building 21 footers that can reach 100MPH with stock power. Pretty mind boggling when you think of it. I mean is anyone building new 21 SOB's with proprietary technology and the latest materials except for these two companies? I think these are the only two builders left. Most folks can't afford the bank that is required to run these hulls new, which is a large reason you do not see them in the NY Metro area I suspect. Maybe one day I will see one running in New York harbor and then I can beg the owner for a ride!

I certainly couldn't afford a new one, I was lucky and got a good deal on mine! The old owner now runs the smaller F3 Extreme, with a fiddled 1.8 V4 yam and runs over 70 in it. A friend of mine was at the factory a few weeks ago and they were fitting a 1350 Merc into the new F1 Extreme hull (23ft). If you can build a good enough boat then people are definitely willing to pay good money!

Personally the Ocke and Bernico do not have the eye appeal... JMPO!
No doubt they run very well with simple power, are well built with todays latest technology and greatest of material. IMPO, they still have to have consumer appeal to be made marketable.

Now for the Tuff: I think that hull style will never get outdated and consumers will never get tired of looking at them.... JMPO.
I feel that Mark builds an awesome boat/product and it does not really matter how lite he builds them, they will hold up due to the building method, they will run quite fast and very well over some rough water when properly setup, balance is key in any setup!

Also lets face it, any new 21,22 you buy today no matter what it is with decent power, proper rigging, good quality steering, good trailer and a couple of extras you will be in $50,ish + easily. Motor alone is close to $20,000....JMPO
