    Mountain Bike Guys.....

I brought two mountain bikes down here from Ohio and now spend 95% of our time on the road (no mountains or dirt in this state!) and looking to convert them over.
My bikes both have wide knobby tires but on narrow (maybe 1") rims. I thought I found tires I wanted on e-bay but the ad says they won't work on mountain bike tires. What gives???
I've had a dozen sets of tires on these bikes and don't remember anything special but it's been yrs.
One had pesta valve tires w/the small valve holes in the rims but I drilled them out and switched to standard vales yrs ago w/zero issues.

No way I'm the only one doing this conversion??

    Thanks for your help.
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

ive drilled rims as well without issues. only issue i could think of is if you are trying to put a super narrow road tire like a 700 x 23 on a one inch wide rim it might not seat correctly or from make the tire that wide by doing so that you are not only riding on the tread but the side wall as well.

the rims on our mtn bikes are about an inch wide, and on the road bikes less than 3/4 inch

That was my thinking too but I'm looking at tires 1 3/8" wide so can't see that as an issue. May just be an e-bay guy covering his ass.

What are the orignal sized tires?

If you have a 29'er you can use 700 x 25c sized road tires. Just use a smaller tube.

If you have a 26'er you can use a 26 x 1.5 tire. I have also used the 2.25 tube with no problems.

26's. They have 1.75" tire on them now and also had 2.25 tires on same rims w/same tubes. Was also wondering about the tubes with 1 3/8" tires like I want but I'll probably replace all 4 tubes as well.
    Thanks for the input.

Maybe they are for a hybrid? They use to make slick tires... called "Fatboys" I think. Can't remember who made them. I never cared about the extra drag when I was riding. But I understand if your just cruising around.

From a search... they look pretty good. http://www.performancebike.com/bikes...400237__400237

That's a great looking tire. Here's another good inverted tread one. http://www.maxxis.com/Bicycle/Urban/Holy-Roller.aspx

I have a mountain bike that we ride on concrete trails. LOL I bought a set of Kendra kross plus for it and have been happy. It seems like the knobby tires start slowing down as soon as you stop pedaling. These seem to work well for me. I am not sure if they come in your size but here is a picture of the tread design.

Thanks for the help guys. Just bought four of these. Another difference is too is that these take 100 psi so lower rolling resistance.
We have a really nice, hard packed sand trail along the river though that I doubt these will work on. Keeping the knobs just in case.

    Whas happinin Jim?

They don't recommend road tires on mountain bike rims because road bike rims are designed for the higher pressures, they make mountain bike specific road tires that run at around 60 psi...I run a 1.5" on the front and a 1.25" on my hybrid road/mountain bike. Double wall rims can handle higher pressures but since they are designed for lightness they are not higher rated.

I have three mountain bikes, a 2009 Trek Session 88DH, 2003 Titus LocoMoto and a Giant Boulder SE converted to road bike gearing with tubeless smoothies for speed.

I have tried just about every tire on the market and if your looking for a good compromise tire a Kenda Small Block 8 in 2.0" is fast rolling with ramped knobs in the center and closely spaced knobs, great hardpack tire readily available at any bike shop. For tubeless I like the Continental Race Kings also a great hardpack tire.

Instigator, what ya should do is buy my road bike.
It's a Raleigh Tri-Lite, three main tubes are aluminum and the rest cro-mol. The aluminum tubes are glued to the cro-mol tubing using the same adhesive used on the Space Shuttle heat tiles.
I added Cinelli aero stem and handle bars and it has Mavic MA40 rims. I bought it new back in 89 for over 400.00 plus the added parts but for you, Only 99.99 plus shipping. It's in excellent condition. I didn't put many miles on it cuse of work.

Now thats funny We have actually been talking about getting road bikes but we already have four bikes ( 2 mountains and 2 folders) and I hate the idea of 2 more. Not sure the Mrs could handle the riding position either. I need to borrow one for her and see what she thinks.
We have a couple of decent places around here for the MB's but requires hauling them there to ride so we don't do that very often.
if I could stand to part w/them I'd switch to road bikes.
We are both struggling w/middle age and what our bodies are trying to do and how to combat that and more time on a bike may be in our future. We're lucky that we live in an area thats perfect for it. Just a matter of getting out the door.
I might be interested in your bike if you were closer. Shipping would probably equal the price of the bike.

Fun, I've looked into and there are some around here too. Just matter of making the effort and time.

4jaw, thanks for the info. That makes sense. When we were up north I had many tires hanging on the wall based on terrain as well. Down here though, no hills close to us and you can have any terrain you want as long as it's sand
