I bought a boat with a VZ300. The previous owner was claiming nearly 86 (salt) but I only ran about 83.5 (fresh). From memory, I did the Hydrotec heads and got over 85. I then figured out a way to modify the water inlet, raised the motor, and got another 1 to 86. I cut up the airbox and got 88. I then did the Hydrotec tuner, solid mounts, bored/ported throttle body, reeds, and cut cages, but the boat only did 88.2 because I was on the limiter hard. I got a taller prop, but never got a chance to run it out before selling the hull.
Now, that engine has been slightly detuned with a stock throttle body and mounted with its twin brother on a 23' Eliminator. They are both Stage 2's and, as luck would have it, only 8 apart in serial number. The lower units are Bob's coned, not VMAX because they never made a VMAX counter-rotating.

I've got C-fibre reeds in my Phase III but I doubt you could tell the difference between them and Chris Carson's or TDR's. Heads, tuner, and porting work on these motors...

I have a Yamaha 3.3L phase III w/sportmaster gearcase which I bought used already mod’d. I’m just finishing up my second year with it and I’m very happy. There have been reports of phase III engines on Stroker bassboats over 110 mph ready to fish.
The first 3 links below from bwb should give an idea on what to expect from Hydro Tech. The last link is a test “racer” did on a few different reeds.

Mine isn't an HPDI its an earlier ox66 efi...but it is cut down to 16" (the mid is similar enough between the engines). It runs on 91. I have a modded HPDI lower which I did myself with the stock propshaft and I spin a 28X15" Cleaver, a 32X15 Cleaver or a borrowed 34X15" cleaver....the motor would pull a skier with the 34 no problem..
