Black Gear Oil
Drained the gear oil after 1 short season on my 2012 Evinrude 250 HO. It was pitch black. Does this indicate a problem or is that the stock oil?

As long as you don't have a gritty feeling in the oil, does it have a magnetic lower drain plug? If so, inspect any debris that is stuck there. How many hrs does it have on it, was the gear lube changed after the first 20 hrs? Dark dosen't necessarily mean there is trouble. Omc's do however drain much darker than yamaha for sure. Make sure you refill with the factory spec oil, i would not use an after market product. Good luck

They changed the HPF-Pro formula last year so you may see a color change sooner than the older oil did. As long as there is no water or metal shards, you are OK. If you do a lot of high speed driving, you have an HO model, you may see a color change quicker than an average recreational boater would.

Evinrude doesn't state to replace it for 3 years, but I wasn't waiting. I think I should have done 20 hours anyways but I'm probably under 50 hours.
I flushed it and refilled with new gear oil and will change that in the spring and then change again after 10 hours to see what it's doing. No water in it, a little metal sawdust, not much or more than normal.

i used to use the hpf oil at work and to be honest i dont rate it. i think the quick silver hi perf is much better. i thought the hpf burnt out too quick too.
As long as the oil does not have the burnt smell im sure you are ok but if it smells burnt it may be worth getting it serviced under warranty in case a problem is there, but im sure all is well.Last edited by phantomuk; 11-12-2012 at 07:21 PM.

i changed my oil every 10 hours on the counter drive it was dark,i took lower apart
and found the drive shaft bearing rollers looked like the surface was gone
everything else nice ,so new bearing and seat and see in the spring ,the the other lower
is fine and never turns dark.

I'm saving some of the oil in case I start having issues or they want a sample sent to them. I'll call Evinrude and see if they want anything checked. I ran the Mecruiser Hi Performance in my 1995 Evinrude 225 and didn't have this issue. Also it seemed very sticky, which I'm not sure but thought that meant it was burnt.
Guess I'll have to wait till spring and see what happens.

If you run the gearcase even close to surfacing conditions, there is more heat and you will need to change the oil more often. Oil is cheap, compared to a gear case failure. I change mine at about 20 hrs run time on my stream, and use the merc hi -performance type.

gear oil can turn black just from it additives over time, or it could be burnt from excessive gear pressure and additive depletion. If the oil was burnt, you would smell it for a week if you got it on you and on your clothes.
If the oil does not smell real bad, then it is just discolored.
