Twin engine outboard drag boat.......
Figured id start a thread about something thats been on my mind for a while...so my first question is, has there been any successful twin outboard drag boats? I know most classes that are raced have rules that say "single engine outboard".....ive checked. Its a little disheartning. The reason this has been on my mind more and more is because this winter ws are rigging my twister with twin outboards. Its by no means a race boat but im a numbers person. My venom with me in it weighs lets say 1600lbs. It can run an 11 sec 1/4mi. So lets assume my etec is 250hp. Power to weight ratio is 1hp for every 6.2 pounds. Well my twister with me in it, twin 250hp etecs should weight about 2400lbs at the most. Power to weight ratio is now 1hp for every 4.8 pounds. Now I know my twister wont.launch the way a venom does, but a purposly built twin drag boats power to weight ratio should, destroy a single. Notice I said should, doesnt mean it will. With lets say twin merc outboards on a lightweight purpose built boat, whats possible? Just thinking aloud....

There is a twin engine drag boat up here. Chet smacked it around like a mouthy, red-headed stepchild at a 4th of July picnic. Then he fed it beans and told it to go home to mommy.

I have thought about a twin drag boat too, must be the northern winters.
Thanks Ron. I'll be the first to admit that Tom made a mistake and lifted because he was coming on strong and would have had me on the top end for sure. That was the first weekend that they raced the boat and have since changed the setup.Chet Olson

if im allowed in kdba and lucas....ill bring it to a rope race. Im thinking for heads up racing, imagine a 1500 boat with twin drags? With counter rotating props, it would come out of the hole nice and strait.lol. there is a talon x22 with twin 260's up at menominie (spelling) that looked pretty good. Its still a heavy boat.

I have checked my Lucas Rule Book and the only class it specifies no multi engines in Proffessional Classes, TFH, TAH, TAF, PM. No mention of it in the rest of the rule book. I have sent an email to our KDBA President and the Chief Inspector for KDBA to make sure. Just takes a BIG rope deflector (no PVC)multi kill switches
Hope this helps and I sure hope to see you on the rope with a multi-engine race boat!!!

I'm Chet's biggest fan. Actually, my friends I bring racing with me love watching him run. Probably more than watching me.

Yeah I hear ya. Saw him run that modified hydrostream at Three Lakes this year. His passes were crazy no doubt.
You were up there right?
Id like to run that talon next year with my twister. Could be fun.Larry Gempp Jr.

Larry I belive you are talking about Tommy Johnson's TalonX not sure but I think they are atleast mod 260's. That is a pretty light lay up boat but not sure on wieght compared to the Twister. I know my Twister with twin 260's was very quick but never drag raced it. I always wanted to and if I every find the time to put it back together I will. The build sheet on mine says 790# out the mold, I guessed 400# for rigging and 700# for motors. I say go for it... I'm sure you wont be disapointed. I think it would be tough to be in the Green class at 3 lakes and competitive in many others. Not to mention ripping around all day on 30 gals a fuel unlike mine, it was more like 30 gals an hour lol.

Twin engines were common up until the V-6's came along.. Just the cost and upkeep of twin motors became
so great, and if you could win with a single on a light boat, it just was no longer practical. The link above show
the records I have found of what used to be known as "Top Outboard" run what ya' brung' racing.
