Why would you specify "pound for pound"? If you are asking if you take the speed with a pair of V8s (which OMC V8s, they had multiple horsepower ratings and I think varied from about 3 liters all the way to 4) and divide speed by pounds, and then take Mercury 2.4 & 2.5 (which 2.4 and 2.5, they had multiple horsepower ratings from 150 to 280 and even 300 if you include the drags) and divide speed by pounds................................. Also in your question why not include the 3 liter and 3.2 liter Mercurys since they are closer in both weight and displacement to the OMC V8s.
Without trying to seem rude I do not see the relevance of the pound for pound comparison. If you want to ask if a pair of 2.5 280s will outperform a pair of 300 horsepower 4 liter V8's or any other specific OMC V8 on a 26' boat then you could probably find someone here who could give you an informed opinion.
For an uninformed opinion maybe SC will jump in here.bama hama

Can I have some of your popcorn Kevin?
Um....let me ask you this, What 26' boat? Which V8 Model? Which 2.4/2.5 Model? What are you doing with it?(Race/Pleasure) Lets go from there......All I know is with the new motors we have nowadays, Id cry at the thought of seeing two carb V8's on the back of my boat. <and
And Im an Evinrude guy. Maybe if I owned a Gas Station....lol

This thread is going to cause some battleiing, but I would say yup.........you can not beat them for torque compared to the Mercs on a large boat. They have better performance than the old 3.4 300 Mercs and can be customed to very high HP but have very weak gearboxes if you want to air them out. Also they drink more than a fish and always premix, no VRO. Also parts are getting hard to come by and you may want to buy some extras...........like powerheds and gearboxes. Tough choice or go with trip 2.5 Mercs.....no 2.4s. Or go to twin SHO Yamahas or HO E-tecs. Im sure there will be a lot of opinions.

Fellas.... at this point I think it would be a great Idea to bring in our new resident
v8 specialist Scmarineperformance. he has more knowledge in his left pinkie
than any of us could ever hope to have. Apparently he has done things with a
v8 that no mere mortal can concieve!@@!(#&#$+
We may have to wait till tommorow... because i think its past his bed time!!

Lets say 28' Skater. pair of 300 v-8 Evinrudes compared to a pair of 2.5's on the same boat, for pleasure in the ocean in say 2-3' seas.

No comparison v8s will break mids n lowers n 280s will prob blow
28s need 300x or xs's due to offshore clamps
theres no true pound for pound battle they complete diff
Yes I know there have been fast 28 skaters with 280s but less drama would b to have lower rpm mtrs on such a big boat
