Impatience and just plain being stupid. Sucking air into water intakes on the non XS lower unit.

What will you be doing to correct the issue? Tie-bar adjusted straight ahead, or toed one way or the other?

They are straight ahead, looks odd from the angle is all. Plugged the top 4 holes and opened up the area between the bottom 3, then fashioned up some scoop type plates similar to the overpriced Mercury ones and bolt thru the 4th hole from the bottom. If I can't hold WP after that I am going to plumb a transom mounted pick-up into the flush port on the side of the gearcase as a last resort. Really just need another XS lower at a price I can afford.

Nothing simple or easy Michael. A long time ago, we ran an OS boat with three RH units--it did not have power trim--it stretched the limits of Dual Ride Guide.
I made a LH unit by machining the teeth completely off the FWD gear, I think it worked pretty good (wasn't legal)--soon we got help from Mercury: LH rotation; full gear shift; bronze carrier; pretty good LH props---finding one of those units 50 years later??? Lots of luck--

Can't you counter-rotate the whole motor? Some guys running Super Speedmasters used to doo that because the left-hand rotation lower had a much shorter life span than the rights. I guess this was because of having all the drive from both pinions going to a single two sided gear on the prop shaft. It would seem to me that keeping forward thrust on the forward gear in the case would be better. All this being said my lower unit experience was with 50s and 850s.

Counter-rotating the motor won't work. The forward gear dogs face the wrong way. My bad.
