Possibly dirt in the oil system. Were the filters changed at the 3 yr/300hr service? What oil were you running? What does the piston top look like? What was your max rpm? Any codes?

Water in the oil system,I have found water in the oil tank of many blown motors. This is a problem when people don't take care of there oil system, condinsation is a big problem, you must keep the oil tank full at all times.
I found this much water in the oil tank of a merc I just tore down for a customer. They cant live on that.

Greg is correct we find water in alot of tanks when we service them. Have a Merc in right now with a rod out the side and the tank had more water than oil.
