I agree with instigator,I too have worked on yamas,it seemed everyone that I serviced I found had stuck thermostats, milky oil and those bolts suck!i swear they're made out of silly puddy, good luck getting them out in one piece, even heating them hardly works,at least with Merc and omc you can usually get them out with a little heat to them and talk about over priced parts, yikes! The biggest problem with Merc 2.5's was the oil gear failure,if you mixed the oil ,problem solved, then they lived a long time. The old omcs were ok if you got rid of the crappy electrics and throw the flywheel in the garbage can and the VRO,other than that they were ok.

I run ETECS commercially and, we have a huge turnover rate due to the hours being put on them. I have one power head still running with 3000 hours on it. the vast majority of my engine make 2500 hours with out a rebuild, sure components go in time but no catastrophic failures. i can post engine reports to back up my statement.
Oh and the hours are built up in under 18 months. if anyone would like to PROVE any other motor can do this i would like to see it.

Imagine a crossflow with etec injection, it would be the worlds greatest workhorse.
( I did notice Rick Mc has a patent on that as well)

Contrary to common belief, there are/were emissions credits under the EPA rules for outboards. That may well have been one of the reasons for Mercury to rush to the market with DFI and OMC with FICHT.
It was a long time ago, though. Whether they can still be used, and if any manufacturer has any left, I don't know...Markus' Performance Boating Links:

It would be great if OMC would sell a conversion kit for the V8 electronics, heads, fuel and oil systems. The rest could be hand built.

etec conversion will need new pistons as well most likely
It would make BRP big friends with the EPA to convert carb engines to efi

I do not have a dog in this fight. But I will pass along some info on my good friends 250 etecs. He had 2 of them on a 31 center console that was fished in kingfish tournys for a four years. In those four years he had 4 powerheads replaced under warranty by Bombardier. His warranty just ran out, he sold motors and put on merc 250 optis. He claims boat is faster and more efficient with the optis. Just passing the info along. If the etec fans would like to talk to him, I'm sure he would be happy to tell you about all the problems he had. Got another friend with a 300 etec on a flats boat, and he loves it. Go figure....
Just so I don't get scolded for not staying on topic, it would be very cool to see a v8 etec......Cawley

My 1800 hour 200HO had the original power head and never gave me any issues sits on the limiter with a 34. When I first put it on it did have a broken TPS wire but that was from shipping it with 10 other motors piled on it on a trailer for 1200miles
My uncle's opti decided it didnt like a rod and puked it with 300hrs. My other friend has 2 opti's on a concept with 800hours and run great he loves them. My ZF23 donzi has twin 150 optis they run great (aside from a bad fuel pump from sitting) and have 700hrs on them great motors. I have a friend one of his 200HOs just lost compression on one hole at 2500hours his starboard motor is still running great with over 2500hrs now. I dont know what they do to blow them up but lord knows ive been trying with mine i have never even changed a fuel filter or spark plug (i did gap them once, they were almost twice what they should have been )Last edited by baja200merk; 10-23-2012 at 07:25 AM.

It would be cool to see as an alternative to the Yamaha monster.
