Lifter Failure and new cam selection
Hello all,
I have a 1989 Caliber 1 jet boat with a 454 Chevy and Berk JG. I pulled the engine and took it to the shop because I had a lifter take a dump. I have been told that now there are metal particles all through my engine and at the very least I will need a new cam, lifters, bearings and rings. My question is what type of cam should I put in the engine. My 454 is an LS6 with rectangle port heads. I would like to have the nice choppy idle sound. I am not sure what lift and duration to go with on the cam or what manufacturer. Can any of you guys give me your recomendations? I would really appreciate your input to help guide me. Thank you in advance.

That is expensive. My engine builder told me to use Kendall oil because it still has Zinc and Phospurous for the flat tappet cam. Any recommendations on lift and duration?

You won't think this after the second time the cam goes flat.
Bullet Camshafts have probly made more cams than any one for jet boats.

its hard to have enough valve spring pressure to control valve float with the big 2.19 intake valve the rectangler port head has and not have lobe failure.i have had several ls6 and ls7 crate motors years ago when gm sold them for just over 2000.00. i found they either pulled the valve locks thru the retainer or wiped a lobe after a few hundred miles.and all were sold with no warranty.it is cheaper in the long run to buy a complete hyd roller cam kit.i like comp cams.cam troubles are gone and a added bonus is roller out performs a flat tappet because of narrow contact on lifter roller lets the cam have more aggressive ramps on cam lobe. flat tappet lifter is like hitting a wall if lobe does not ramp up slowly.

I heard your engine oil can run as much as 40 degrees cooler too!
