mercruiser info needed

Hi everyone
I am consdering buying my first inboard boat, a British deep vee sport cruiser cuddy cabin 21 foot. It is coming with a new to be fitted 5.0/305 long block carb engine. I have no experience of Mercury inboards, and being UK based have little knowledge of GM V8's .
My question is, is there any simple mods to increase power . i am assuming it will be about 230HP. What are the options to increase power to between 260 - 300HP, and any downsides.
Anyone have experience of 'Megasquirt' injection on this engine

i would just leave it the way it is. if the engine is being fitted why not just buy the 5.7 or bigger being it needs to be installed and you are looking already to increase power.
