I'd have it powdercoated, but if not you'll need a metal etch primer and the automotive paint of your choice.

use imron etching primer and single stage urethane paint.clean the metal really good with wax and grease remover, blow dry with air then do the primer, with a 10 minute flash time then the black right on top of it while its still tacky.
this is how i paint aluminum semi truck cabs, i have seen them get hit with chains, dent the aluminum and the paint never flake.

If cost is not an issue, treat bare aluminum with alodine, then coat with epoxy primer. And finish coat with black emron.IMO its the best you can do.There may be something almost as good, or even better for a lot less $ I dont know of.

The problem with powercoat, is that if you get another crack, you may not see it. It is hard to repair and re powercoat vs paint too.

Just did mine, use Imron #99U.There is another # below that not sure if you need it.A00420529.Two parts paint to one part hardner.Mix, let sit 15 min. First coat mist, wait 10min,second coat med.wait 10-15 min then last coat.If you get a run leave it, you can sand with 1200-2000 grit on a mixing stick, and buff with some good compound you will never know it was there!-----Good luck---BTW, I dont know of anything that will match the gloss of imron two or three years down the road

When you paint this stuff, epoxy primers imron, etc. make sure you have a Tyvec suit rubber gloves and a really good resperator and plenty of fresh air moving out of the spray area. This stuff is nasty, 20 years from now.
