    32" two blade bronze prop

My neighbor was cleaning out his garage (sold his boat) and gave me some boat wax and an old Merc racing 2 blade bronze prop. I think it's 32. He may have tried it once decades ago on his 150 inline but it was too much.

I know it's too much pitch and too few blades to be right for my boat. But it's there...

Would I hurt my delicate XR4 gearcase if I put the old prop on, started in gear, and just cruised up to 50? How far under water should I run the gearcase if I try this? Or should I just put the prop on the wall with the other props?

    Could you post a picture?
I'd like to see an old 32" prop.

I would need a thicker thrust washer or a washer on the back side to run the prop. Just as well.

The old bronze prop is pictured with a 31 Triton, which is my fastest prop.

    David,
Thanks for posting the pic.... That's cool, especially next to the Triton!
If you ever want to sell it (the two blade), I'd be interested..... stick it on my wall?
Again, Thanks for posting the pic.
    Thanks,
    Tim Bostic

Sure I could sell the 2 blade to someone who would appreciate it. And then give the money to my friendly neighbor. He got the prop from a friend of his who raced inline 6 tunnels way back when. The prop didn't work out for the racer so he gave it away. It was too much for a 135 inline on a 16' flatbottom family boat. The only marking on the prop is '32'.

I put the Triton beside it for reference to a modern prop.

I still run them But on a inline mounted to a vintage boat. I have never tried a 32 The most I could swing is 30 with 2:1 gears.

I think I have seen these up to 36 pitch before on ebay. 36 pitch on a twin motor set up is nearing the 100 mph zone. Crazy.

Did you try on your Merc; if so, what gear ratio, speed and rpm? Don't think they made 32". The number should be stamped in the side. Is it cupped? I'm still looking for a chart on these. Is this the 26" you posted in June? I sent you a PM and a reply to your (2 blade bronze prop) search.

I had run one of these many years ago on a 65 merc 14' glaspar and a 16' banchee w/135 inline. It ran actually very smooth and was faster then a 3 blade I also tried.

Run it for fun you might be very surprised.

We never tried the prop last summer. I was talking to my brother at the TO boat show on Sunday and he says we have to try it. It will take a special thrust washer but that's just a few bucks.

The prop has '32' stamped in the side, that's the only marking. Just eyeballing, it looks every bit as steep as my 31 Triton. I got the PM, and can measure the prop some time in Feb when I go back to the cottage. Everything is frozen now.

For $50 I'd keep it as a conversation starter. I'm sure there's an amount that I'd have to sell it for, as it's not mine and the owner would like the cash. He gave it to me, but we talked and he would like cash if I sell it. I don't know what you would put that steep a 2 blade on...

I assumed it was the 26" as in your other post. Found this website this AM:
    http://www.maxrules.com/oldmercs/Propellers/Props/13.pd
Also this site by Ron Hill::boatracingfacts
    Search
    Mercury Nos Racing Props
But 13 1/2" may be in error. I used to have the Merc book and it matches and shows 26" as top pitch. Probably need the old Merc splined washer, I have one around here the # and got this:
    http://www.boatpartguys.com/ocart/4846158A4
    Prop calculator: http://www.rbbi.com/folders/prop/propcalc.htm
    Your XR 4 with 1.78 gears 4 1/4" LU; If that's right?
    5000 rpm 1.78 27" .15 slip = 61 mph.
I get 15 to 18% with my cvx 16 with a 23" 2 blade Merc bronze. Check out 'Another Prop for the Collection' on CGOAMN: David and GCarlover. That's me. You can get more good out of the prop than me if it fits your spline. Don't gun it too hard on take off or you may get hub damage. Reply to this thread when you get out of the deep freezer.
