Thread: Gearcase Questions

Can anyone give me a reason why Mercury has changed the production gearcases and went to a non ramped clutch dog type gear.
This seems like a bad design to me but someone please correct me if I am wrong.
My biggest concern is that upon a fast shut down or even an engine failure at top speed what will happen since the prop will no longer freewheel on the clutch dog. I really don't see this as being a problem on a tunnel boat but damn, I do believe this could make for some problems in a V-Bottom.
Also wont this put a lot of stress on the drive shaft as well as the crank shaft upon decelleration since it is now a direct drive and the prop will be getting dragged through the water without being able to rotate.
Any input will be greatly appreciated,
Thanks,
ED

Halfast, can this gearset be changed?
or is this a bastard case that only parts from other cases like it will work.
Why did they make this change?
The last 200 case I had still had the ramp style gearset and it always worked fine without a single problem.
I guess that this is one of mercury's better idea's???
Why change a good thing.
Maybe they just want to make them like OMC has for years.
