Lets bring this thread back from the dead and give the old guys something to remember.

Here are some of the BEST drivers/rigs I remember (92-95 era, yes older than 20 years, but these guys made it happen with a lot less than they do today IMHO) .

I grew up around all these guys and I can tell you they are legends/pioneers in this sport.

You could find most of these guys at legendary "Ditch" in Port Allen, LA on any given weekend.

#1 hands down is Bob Kottman. "The Missouri Missile" HST Hydrostream / Yamaha (THE KING)

The rest in no particular order:

Mike Watts' Super Stock / 1400 Modified JSRE 2.5 Allison / V King
    Stan Fittz's 1400lb/1600lb Modified JSRE 2.5 Allison
Jay Smith's 1400lb Modified JSRE 2.5 Mirage Polecats
    Scotty Graham's 1400lb Modified / V6 Comp STV / Mirage Wildcats 2.5 by Roberie
Richard Hammontree's V6 Comp Tiger Mirage Wildcat (First Mercury 2.5 injected on alcohol built/fabricated by JSRE in 1993)
    Kevin Mumford's V6 Comp 2.5 Allisons
Willie Atwood's V6 Comp JSRE 2.5 Alcohol Mirage Wildcat
Tommy Hughes' V6 Comp Alcohol 2.5 by JSRE Allison
    David Pou's V6 Comp Yellow Allison w/ Kottman 2.5
    Key Puckett's Super Stock / 1400 Modified / V6 Comp JSRE 2.5 Allisons
Ivan Watson's 1400lb Modified Allison / Kottman Yamaha
Steve Tillman's V6 Comp Mirage Jaguar / Allison GForce 2.5
Bubba Ellisor in Dwayne Roberie's V6 Comp Yellow Mirage Wildcat
Roy Cullen's Unlimited MIrage Wildcat "Duck Vader" Alex Hledin 2.5
RP Breaux's V4 Comp Mirage Cheetah / Kottman Yamaha
Phillip Bond's Super Stock Allison 2.5
Todd Roberts' V6 Comp Allison - Junior Eaves 2.5
    Jay & Chuck Manuel's V6 Comp STV 2.5
Charles Hoven's 1400 Modified Mirage Jaguar 2.5 by Junior Eaves
Joe Searcy / Johnny Wade's 1400lb Modified STV Diamond 2.5
    Dewayne Carlock's Unlimited STV - Roberie N2O 2.5
    John Heurtevant's Unlimited STV Roberie N2O 2.5

Just a few of the guys / rigs that stood out back then. ANY of these guys could win in a 35+ boat field.

excellent question. I have always wondered, other than engines themselves, what are the one or two things that have lead to the largest gains in speed over the years? Hull design, prop design, nitrous, carbon fiber?

Setups and prop work have gotten better. Not sure what you mean by unregulated fuel. ODBA and DSRA still run Sunoco 112 as their spec fuel. Only class that runs unregulated fuel is Pro Drag and extremely light weights combined with exotic fuels are the reason that class is so quick

No disrespect to the old days they had the brains but simply didn’t have the technology. The times are off the charts compared to 10 yrs ago nevermind 25yrs ago.

106mph in 300ft rings a bell not gonna mention any names

The fuel was certainly not unregulated. DSRA had a full tech department lead by RP Breaux.

Sounds pretty salty, it could be one of two boats. The OMC on my boat was well on its way to that. I had a run where I lifted at 250 ft and the boat coasted up to 103 at 330. Flipped it about three passes after that. Lol
