V6 Mercury bleed pipe plumbing advice
Hi there, after searching previous post's on V6 Merc bleed pipe plumbing I still can't find the answer I need.
I have a 1979 200hp Merc powerhead in a drag bike I've built & now I've come to re install the bleed pipes I can't figure out where one goes.
The engine is a 2.4 vertical reed model with the 6 bleed pipes from transfer ports to inlet manifold, these are all ok, but there is another check valve on the inlet manifold, its the one down by cylinders 5 & 6 between the 2 that go to block pipes. Where does it go to ???
Any help greatfully recieved.
Pics of bike attached, still not quite finnished but well on the way.
thanks Finchy.

Strictly from memory, that bottom one would go to the air box, had a much larger nut size as I recall.

Thanks transomstand, yes it has 1/2" hex on it, will it be ok to vent in the open as now I do not have an airbox ???
It appears to be connected to the outer main bearing oilways, so I guess its pretty important. This is why I'm refitting the pipes, the crank seal started to squeak from running dry !!!
Any advice on these bleed pipes would be appreciated, should I blank any off or leave as Mercury intended ?? It appears I have a massive amount to learn about these strange( in bike terms) engines so I am all ears !!
thanks, Finchy.

I'd rather review my old service information before I give too much advice based only on memory. I'm getting ready for my boating event right now (starts Thurs) and will be travelling soon, so I may not get a chance until I'm back next week. Hopefully, someone else will pipe up on this.

Thanks for the comments guys.
Dave, the top pic is what I've got & I've got the six pipes connected as per diagram, but there is another barb fitting between the bottom 2 hose barbs on inlet manifold in that diagram & its that one I want to know where it goes & what it does, in fact if anyone can explain how the bleed system works it would be appreciated,
thanks,
Finchy.

I my bad memory is working it may be a hose that went to the airbox to suck away blow back fuel and oil from the airbox. Not 100% sure.

I have just looked at a couple of 2.4's I got here... The earlier one has the 6 bleed ports on the manifold plus a brass type 1/2 screw in type bleed port between 5 and 6... That one goes to the airbox... To do just as Dave has said above...
You can safely block that one off...
On the later 2.4 it only has 5 bleed ports and its just blank where that other port is on the earlier one..

Thats the one I'm on about for certain. Many thanks for the help guys, I'll just block it off then, was worried that it would affect the bearing feed as it is under that plug,
thanks again,
finchy.

Drag bike
Hi,Just make shure you have a hose between the bottom most hose barb and the top bearing. Most important, tell us something about the drag bike!Maybe a picture.Got to be a handfull.I've always thought a big DFI motor would be great in a dragbike. As long as the vst tank is vertical no concerns about carb mounting.~ Randy

Hi Randy, there is no provision for a pipe to top bearing as far as I can see, not knowing anything about these motors previously I may be wrong, but it appears that there is a linking channel cast in the underside of the inlet manifold that connects top & bottom bearings, would this be the same thing ??
As far as bike goes, its built from scratch by myself, with an old 2.4 motor, Honda fireblade gear cluster in my own billet gear casing, nitrous, air shifter. Sounds totally mental through the 6 expansion chambers. Still in early development stages but when I get it all working together should be fast enough to scare myself silly !!
cheers Finchy.
