Allison boat setup question
I am a fairly new owner of an Allison XB2003PTS. Here are the specs that I am currently running.
Motor - 1999 Johnson Venom 200 hp stock w/stock lower unit(not coned).
Jackplate - Allison stardard jackplate not sure size
prop - renegade bass prop 14.5 x 25(i think) also have a 28 or 30 pitch prop but could only turn 4500 rpms with it.
speed - 57 gps at 5000 rpms
What should i do differt to get the 80+ speed everyone else is getting. Motor is strong and compression test are good(120ish on all 6 holes).

A must is a coned lower unit, this will allow you to raise the motor close to even with the pad. You should have no problem running 80 with a 28 pitch prop. To hit 80 with a 25 pitch prop assuming your gear ratio is 1.87 with 10% slip you would have to hit 7000 rpm's, with a 28 6200 rpm's....

I am thinking of selling the venom and getting a newer motor that is a little better on fuel and having it coned before install. Any suggestions on make and size for the Ally XB2003? Would like to cruise around 50 and still get the best MPG. Price is really not a cocern but would like to still get the best bang for buck deal I can on a used motor. Also what are the best all around props for these boats. 150 to 250 is where I assume I want to be on the hp, the 150 giving me the best MPG and the 250 for the power. I only know what I have researched on the motors.

If your buying new , Mercury offers a SportMaster gear case , with there XS series of motors . So there is no need for the nose cone .
BRP , also offers a performance model gear case to , Although the water pick up is not on the bottom , of the case , you can still get the motor jacked uo high enough to run well just not where it needs to be for the best possable set up .
Personaly I'd like the 200 XS 2.5 liter Mercury , but it has NO WARRANTY .
Your XB 03 is a larger boat , and would handle the weight of a 3 liter motor just fine , so the 250 XS or 300 XS would be a good option also .
All three of these are available with the SPORT MASTER gear case .
Another thing to keep in mind is the Allison Requires Solid Motor Mounts , in order to run at the higher transom highs , and higher MPH , safely .
All the Mercury Performance XS series are manufactured with Solid Motor Mounts .

I would go with the 250 proxs. I have some friends in south Alabama that have these motors on them and I was impressed with how they handled them and the gas mpg will be great. Jacos marine in lawrenceburg tenn has great deals on these motors and have set up Allison's for over 25 years. There number is 9317626710 ask for Barbara. Don't talk to Jerry.

What would point to it not firing on all cylinders? RPM...etc.

RNM018 would the sportmaster lower be same as having my Venom lower coned, performance wise?

Same Principle , yet the Sport Master in a much stronger gearcase . It is aHigh Performance Case , that is desighned to run on the surface , and take the beating that comes with it . Your production case with a Nose Cone , will let you raise the motor up where it needs to be (prop shaft even with the pad) but it will wear very quickly running like this . Also there is the issue of needing the solid motor mounts for your OMC , to take all the side to side play out of the motor . This is very impotant on any high performance V Bottom like your Allison .

My Grandsport 2003 does well with a 2.5XS and 28 Chopper, the motor was only made one year in 2005 though. Same hull as yours and a blast to drive!! 1.87 gears and a sportmaster

That's what I was thinking. Lot's of options out there for the xb2003 to go fast, fish, pretty much what ever you want to do. The 225 promax, 260, 280 in the 2.5 family and the 250 in The XS series. There are a few guys running awesome with the johnrudes also. There's not a whole lot of info out there on hanging a 3 liter on the back. There's more than a few people asking about that setup on allisonowners.com...... The main thing is to get the gear case up. Your dragging an anchor right now. Decide which way you want to go on the engine and then everyone will be able to give more help with setup, setback, props, etc.
