best thing to do is get the # of the block and see what motor it really is and then drop the lower and check the gear ratio

Yes you are right i was misinformed on my 2.0 efi.. Come to find out i had a 2.5 150 efi converted to carb. Mariner Magnum its called. I'm new to the outboard scene and am going to go hang with toyomirage02 and kick it with the smart guys. Tired of not knowing what i'm talking about and just going by what i'm told. This site has been super helpful and am learning more each day.

Mercury
I have just fitted a new red stator to replace the old style black stator on a mercury 75hp 3 cyl . Do i need to fit a new rectifier/regulator or can i just stick with the orginal rectifier? If so where does the new rectifier/regulator get mounted. Sam

My 88 XR4 says Black Max also. The first V6's were beasts for their time, and Merc marketed on that.
Fuel consumption is relative. One far back fishing spot I enjoy used to take me 1 3/4 hours and 2 gallons of fuel with the fishing skow and a 10 horse Johnson. Tracker 1800 and XR4 takes 12 minutes and 3 gallons.
By the way, for mid range performance, it's hard to beat the V6 over a skinny LU. With a little surface piercing, they run real pretty. If you keep the LU well adjusted and lubed, and HP reasonable, they do all right for longevity. They have a reputation for putting the pinion out the side, but that is usually caused by abuse and/or bad adjustment.
Had a little fun on lake Holter in Montana this summer. Was fishing on upper Holter with my son, Josh. Nothing much going on so we went for a ride down through the canyon to lower Holter. On the way back we were running about 2/3 throttle and some dude with a Malibu with several pretty's on it decided to cut over in front of me. I goosed it and he went through my roost, nearly washing his load overboard. Josh about died laughing. I was busy driving out of a collision so I didn't see it. Wish we had pics.
Further up we encountered the tourist boat, bout a 30' displacement vessel. Popped his wake at speed, did a tail dance for a coupla hundred feet, then lost traction and speared the next wave. Gave them a good laugh for sure.
DW says she's glad she didn't go with us.
I might be getting old, but I refuse to grow up.

To fish or not to fish? What a STUPID question.

Revived
Will a l/u from a 1994 Merc 150 fit on a 2003 Merc 225? And vice versa?

I've got the '89 xr4. Brought it back from the dead. Great engine, makes my 19' Checkmate jump out of the water. The electronics can be a little fussy though. It's got the infamous water cooled rectifier, think they only used it for 2 years
