transom bracket setback and 2 jackplates

Hi, I am rigging an older 30' v bottom with no notch. Was going to use 18" setback and stainless marine jackplates. That would make 22" total setback. Twin 300xs mercs. Boat has LG.26" tabs. Any thoughts? We run in rough water a lot. Thanks.

Anyone have experience with larger heavy v bottoms? I want to make sure the setback and height is right. Thanks Cary.

Total setback of 22" won't be enough, especially for an older, heavier, conventional 24 degree type boat. Both leverage wise, static flotation wise, and tiltability wise. What boat is it, by the way? An old Cary/Aronow 29', or?

Hi, thanks for the reply. Yes it is a 29'9" Cary. Some race 28' Panteras had less setback and worked well. My boat has 4 fuel tanks so I can have extra weight up front so the balance is good.

What year is your Superboat? I had a 2004 30 y2k. Do you have a notched transom? Does it fly level? Thanks

I don't have the one with the notched transom. It rides pretty nice to me. The tabs play a major role. You can barry the nose or bring it right up with the tabs. I'm still playing with motor height To get them exact and get a little more speed

what year is it? Is it a heavier older 30? Mine was real light unlike my older boat now. I had 30" tabs that were great. My boat now has large solid stainless steel tabs. I do not ever trim the motors up high enough to need a 30" setback. Also I run rough water a lot and do not want too much stern weight that far back.

Your fuel tanks are currently way forward, compared a "race" rigged 28 Pantera. Your old Cary had a lot heavier fiberglass lamination layup than a "race" 28 Pantera was/is. Your Cary has an intentional hook built into the bottoms running surface, unlike any 28 Pantera race boat would have. Apples & Oranges comparison, if you ask me. With your hull up on blocks, place a minimum 6' straight edge on the bottom, from the trailing edge forward, on both sides of the vee. You'll see what I mean.

I do not have a hook in my boat bottom, I checked that when I got it. I have Bob Lathams personal boat for 30 years. It was the last one they built. He told me they were removing the sign on the building as he drove away. It then became Blackfin. I know my boat is laid up heavy that is what I like about it. Ocean quality like an Apache ride. We run rough water up here on the Great lakes. I have 4 fuel tanks race rigged with the ability to run any tank on either motor. The boat will fly level. I appreciate your feedback. Thank you.

i read the rougher the water the less the setback. but they all benefit from some i think. and engine height. ever consider rigging water from transom to motors. probably a lot of work. feed it to bobs cones maybe. gonna be fun for you

Exactly my thoughts. That is why I did not want too much setback. I bought 20" motors so they run higher rpm. We are in fresh water so the powerhead height to the water is not so much a concern. I also have sporttmaster lowers with low water pickups. I did leave the thru hull transom water pickup on the boat but I didn't think I would need it. The boat was an i/o that I converted. Thanks for your input. 200Vegas
