E-tec cowling to Taylor mid and older 3.0's

Hello guys, I wanted to start a thread for information on Installing a newer E-tec cowling onto taylor 16" mids or older 3.0's. I figure that lots of other will be doing this kind of stuff in the future.
I picked up a nice top cowling, and some trashed pans to modify. Thanks Kevin

    1. I notice that etec cowling does not have the same big rubber groment that goes around the adapter to seal to the pans ? Does the etec have different bigger groment for this ?

    2. The etec has the big tank inside the lower cowling at the back ? what do you do with it ?

    3. I plan on trimming the cowling off at the top of the mid and my steering wing plate will be below the cowling pan. E-tec1 had told me that he glassed a flat piece to bridge the gap between the cowling and mid.

Tips, pointers, advice, and pictures are welcome.
I tried to setup my new motor with my old 1994 cowling for testing, but it does'nt fit. Hits the coils and water plumbing.

Here are some pictures for refference.
    New cowling

    old pans on new motor

    Full throttle powerboats. Jacks work

E-tec1, and Sam Bakers work I believe.

I would like to do the lower pans like Jacks but without the mods to the front.

The mounts all depend on the adaper plate, not the mid. Get rid of the exhaust relief tank, keep the diamond shape rubber boot that goes in between pans and just run strait tubes. Etec-1 just siliconed mine in place. Works fine. I personally like the pisser on it too. I turn it almost sideways so its clear Im getting water pressure. That steeing system is going to be the challenge cause of the extra mid coverage of the Etec lower pans. I own the Taylor mid that was on Sam's boat in those pictures also. It has an Etec adapter plate, so like my other mid, E-tec1 cut and glassed the base. I do find it funny that those that dont run an Etec want the Etec cowl and I run Etecs and want to get as far away from the cowl as possible.....

Thanks for the info. What is different on the adapter ? My new one looks just like my old 3.0 adapter, but Al did lots of mods to it. I believe that I have a 3.0 adapter on this setup, but an etec block. Thanks for the tip on the exhaust tank.

Does the Etec cowling have a rubber grommet around the adapter like the 3.0 does ? Figure it is designed to pervent water from flowing up into the pans.

Looking at them closer, they should fit great. I will be cutting them off right where they turn down vertical. This will retain the back mounting screw below the pisser.
Wish I had a heated shop to work in. I can barely feel my hands to type this on my iPhone .35 deg in an 100 year old dairy barn that I'm using as a shop. Damm it's cold. I would cut pans tonight, but don't think my hands could work a cutting wheel too good. Just finishing some wiring and working on fuel pick up tonight.

Great thread. Had heard what a pain this conversion was but not seen one close enough to understand why.
Kinda likin my old junk now
BTW, I have the (I think '99) Ficht cowling with the forward facing louvers and it is smaller on top & front than a carbed version. My fuel pressure regular is wearing a hole through the top of it where that was a non issue w/a carbed cowling.

I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

My 1994 carb cowling hits the coils and plumbing fittings on the back of the block. It still had about another 4" it needed to drop down, and would likely also hit the fuel pressure regulator and etec water pressure relief gizmo. I realized real quick that the old cowling would not at all. My coils are not in the standard location, back of block. They are on the sides, in front of the heads. They tuck in pretty good there, but make it a little wider.

Who said it was a pain? I could see it being a pain with a 6in or 12in mid but otherwise its not rocket science The biggest pain was getting over the fact that I was taking a grinder to an e-tec pan

I almost bolted a set of cowlings on my 2000 carb motor for the weekend cause the red and white etec matches the boat

The gold wheel on the motor was part of the package deal I got from Greg Jacobsen . The one I bought from you years ago, is still in the box you shipped it in. It will likely go on my old motor when I have Al build it. I bet these gold wheels are getting kinda rare.

More progress on the pans today. I will post more pictures and measurements later to help others considering this project. I have quite a few reasons for this height of the pans, will list them later. These will not be as short as Jacks. To do them as short as his would be a lot more work. The top cowling is hitting the etec water pressure regulator. The top cowl is not sitting down the last inch in these pictures. Nothing ever goes smooth on a custom project
