    Question fuel tank questions

whats up guys,im redoing a 1986 modvp sleekcraft(new stringers, transome work alittle bit of everything.the boat had oringal two 10gal tube tanks one on each side of the boat.those i riped out and got rid of them.now im debating on what kind of tank to run?its going to be around a 19-21gal tank right behind the driver seat middle of boat.now i was looking at some plastic fuel tanks (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000MTCR8W/...SIN=B000MTCR8W).i also got a guy that can build me the same tank for alittle bit more $ but in aluminum.some guys were saying run a plastic tank and others saying run metal tank.this is the last peice i need to finish the boat and b4 i spend few 100s$ of a tank i need some opinions or advice on running a plastic tank or a aluminum tank.thanks

Plastic, won't get corrosion like aluminum tanks from ethenol or crack. Most you can see through.

I'm rather partial to the plastic as well.

Ed, just build a custom aluminum tank, epoxy coat it and paint it to match the inside of the boat.... Plastic tanks are no good when they are out int eh sund/weather constantly, the begin to deform.................... the weight on a 20 gallon aluminum tank vs a plastic tank is minimal

If the tank is going to be exposed, definitely aluminum. Plastic is not vapor-proof and decays in sunlight, but aluminum can corrode if you have to use E-10.

you can get an alum. tank custom fit so it takes less space in the boat and holds more fuel!plastic will be 1/2 the price!fuel will stay cooler in aluminium if polished!plastic is non repairable if damaged [in my opinion]! they both have pos. and neg. points!tough decision!

Both of these added to the fact your fabricator should have the tank fit exactly the dimensions you want and can place internal baffles (with gauge sending unit located to have zero splash reading) with the fuel pick up just where you want it, would push me toward aluminum. You can also do a large fill cap to make it easier to refuel out of 5 gal cans, add oil, etc. Don't forget a proper vent.
To me, a nicely restored/refurbished boat with a plastic tank just sitting there kinda seems like the project just wasn't "finished". But then again, I AM a "West Coast" boater and all about the "bling" you know.

    Tank

I would opt for the aluminum in your case.. And if you use the blue STA-BIL along with a little Sea Foam additive it should take care of the corrosion problems and the Sta-Bil will kill the ethanol.. Jus don't use too much Sea Foam cause it contains alcohol.. The Sea Foam is an awesome fuel sytem cleaner!! On another note, on a boat you would be "RACING" which you would be using a lot smaller tank, and weight is a concern, a tall, thin 10 gal summit plastic cell works great to center the fuel weight over the pad... Jus what I have seen over the years.. hope this helps..
