Its more common if the engine is slammed into reverse while still on plane. With DEC it isnt supposed to shift until the RPMs are under 1500 although I have never been brave enough to find out.

Hi,
I did have a promax 300 with svs and modified ecu on my phantom 25 from 1999 until 2006. From 2006 to last year I had twin merc 2.5 efi ss 280 engines, until I swopped to a single verado 350 sci. I bought it despite people telling me the optimax 300xs would be just as fast. However, the verado 350 sci has 5 years warranty in Norway, the 300 xs has 2.
The verado 350 sci is a very strong engine. Its far stronger than the modified promax 300. Both in accelleration, with load and top speed. Much more consistent in top speed. Does 80 mph all day long. The promax 300 did 76 mph on a good day, and 73-74 mph on an average. And the milage is great, almost 4,6 MPG. I have still more there as the gearcase so big, so the main issue is to get it out of the water. And get a prop to handle it.
I know you can buy a smaller gearcase of 4,88 diameter (standard case for veraso 300 pro) and get 3 mph faster speed easily, but this gearcase is not as strong as my HD 5,44 dia version. So I stick to it and experiement with props first
In my view the verado 350 sci is a great product, but ofcourse, it depends on the setup.

While the new SHO yammis are a real piece of engineering, they will have a real tough road ahead to do any real world performance domination over the merc optis, or the johnson DI motors. Like said before, put more development money into a DI motor and.... well, just look at the performance of the 300XS.....Nothing short of incredible.... The guys with the SHO motors talked a good game before they ran them against the merc XS motors on similar botes around here. They are kinda quiet now.

Guess that depends on which camp you choose to listen to. One thing is for sure.....the Yamaha will be still running long after the other two have gone to the bone orchard! I'm still waiting for Suzuki to enter the lightweight four stroke segment. IMO, the most reliable, best performing four stroke on the market.

As a fishing guide with a lot of time on the water every year, my merc optis have been outlasting the yammis on my buddies boats by a good margin. So the yammis durability is not any better than any other motor. Maybe worse due to corrosion on the yammis. I agree on the zukis, maybe better than the yammis, but still in the real world not quite as good as the mercs. The mercs are the best bang for the buck.

I agree with a least 3 things you said.......Merc, Bang, and Buck....LOL! I have friends with Etecs. They love em too......even after a few new powerheads, but those were replaced under warranty so that's acceptable in their minds. It never fails to amaze me how brand loyalty puts the blinders on some people. It's hard to argue with brand loyal people. I tend to believe the service departments of dealerships that sell multiple brands as to which motors come back for repair. Just go in, look around, and you be the judge. They all have their issues, just some more than others. My experience has been good with all. I owned a 225 Opti for a short while and don't have anything bad to say about it. It ran flawlessly, quiet, and efficient.

I run my motors hard, they last and are very dependable, efficient, fast. What else could you want? Oh yea, American company......Keep buying jap brands, if you like em.....

It's because the market is too small, and the potential liability too large.

I think if you look here theirs a Story of OMC inventing the Sportmaster Style ( I thought), wasnt it one of those weird things were a Big Boss of OMC scrapped it, something about hitting his head on a Bullet???? Maybe that was Late Night Read (ha ha ha), I will tell the SHO Kool Aid folks NO motor is without issues, just go to bassboatcentral.com and check the folks Making oil, doing Oil changes after a couple hours (and being Charged huge fees for oil and filter), now after 2 years the bass guys have figured they have to Run the Piss out of it at Break in, for a full 10hrs NO TRIM, get it super hot and work the hell out of it, those guys are doing OK. Oh, and Suzuki Invented the so called Game Changer years ago, its called the 250 SS, it kind of flopped because Suzuki has a low number of Service and Sales centers.....ALL brands are built to standards that are very true, however it still seems the Old Carbed 2 strokes that we all see daily in the marine business are the most reliable, Coils, Power Packs, Oil and Lower unit fluid.....The good old days....
