"100 mph tested" means they test the bare jacket by crashing a test sled into it at 100 mph "government style." In other words, they throw the jacket against a wall at 100 mph to make sure none of the embroidery, lace ruffles or sequins come undone.

It does NOT mean that the jacket will protect the person wearing it at 40 mph.

I can't understand how someone would spend the money to make their boat lethally fast, but wouldn't be willing to spend 300 bucks to protect their own life.

A good prop costs 300 hundred bucks plus, but your life is worth, what... A $70 bass-fishing life jacket from Overtons? Really?

To start with, after a few incidents I was around or heard about, I got religion and I wear a lifeline. And back in the day when every OPC driver wore a Gentex because they were more comfortable, I wore a bulky Lifeline because it was way more likely to turn me over to breathe if I was unconscious.

That said, the Coast Guard article referred to above was interesting. Absent the 'flak' panels in some racing jackets, no jacket protects you from impact. The big rag on most non-racing jackets is that they won't stay on your body when you hit the wter at 70, 80 or whatever. The article above seems to suggest that a vest rated at 100 mph will stay on. Can't figure out how it can do that w/o leg straps, but if the rating is true it makes up what I understand is the big complaint about ski or jetski vests.

Isn't there a good chance if you don't have leg straps that the jacket could come over your head and break your shoulders,if you fly out of the boat at speed??Chuck

I have been wearing the Mustang 100 mph vest for lake boating since 1996. Back then they were $175. I have been pitched from a boat at 60mph (with vest and helmet on) and I am still wearing the vest with succes today. I would still recommend the SRP or Lifeline for lake or other racing as the collar on these vests will float your head... I have also added leg straps to the Mustang.

I would have to think it boils down to cost. I am in the market for a nice high speed jacket, I think I will go with the lifeline 160. Kurt

Yep...The first contact with the water did'nt hurt that much, it was the next 14 or 15.

Much easier for the family to find the body, and they won't need to hire divers.
