B-29: Frozen in Time.
I read an article about this B-29 a few years ago but had never saw the video until recently. It was an amazing project to recover a complete Boeing B-29 off of a glacier in Greenland that crash landed in the 1950s. Unfortunately, the project fails at the very end. The video is long but very interesting.
Enjoy-

I've seen it before, and it was amazing and heartbreaking at the same time... I'm a complete suckered fool for this kinda stuff and it never gets old... Being intrigued by flight my whole life, those early planes still seem to carry the glory of flight that was alive when powered flight was young... I know we're all used to planes going down a runway and going up, but we've gotten used to it a shame... I'm used to it also, but I don't have to imagine very hard and flight still seems kinda like magic...

I'll post it, but I can't watch it again. Saw it several years ago, and took me about a week to get over it.Living in the Freedom provided by Bud Conner and his fellow warriors.

Thanks Transomstand. It is a very sad story after all the work the guys did to get the plane ready. Plus, what happens to Rick, the chief engineer. It's like watching Old Yeller.

Yup. Saw the Nova episode. Bleve I have an article in National Geographic 'bout it too. Heartbreaking! Can you imagine all the work done. Just the logistics? To rebuild it only to witness the sob burn in front of you. If that ain't a tragedy I guess I dunno what is.

WOW. What a shame! For all that hard work, planning, logistics, etc. All to go up while taxiing down to the runway.

I remember seeing this episode of Nova. What an awful waste and I think that guy's plan to fly that out of there was foolhardy. If I recall his mechanic died in the process and of course they lost the plane and those priceless engines with it. They could have brought the plane back for restoration in pieces, but look what happened with this lame PR plan...

The lone (I think) B-29 flying, FiFi, was found in a boneyard in the desert. According to the pilot of the plane at an airshow, the plane was rebuilt to the point that the FAA gave it is one flight cert to fly to Harlingen TX for a complete restoration. It was awsome and humbling to go through and around this magnificent plane. This pilot flew them in WW2. He, his wife, and several crew ferried it around to airshows. It belonged to the Confederate Air Force, before they had to be PC and change their name to the Commerative Air Force. Amazing what was done back then with the available resources and technology.

I read an article last night about the lead guy in the documentry being very controversial in the antique aviation world. The article said a lot of people recommended that he take the B29 apart and skylift the parts out to a barge and then down to Tulle for restoration. I guess this view was in hindsight now though.

Overly ambitious and not really well thought out. Shame on them. What a waste.
