Tha Mod VP's I have had(and seen) all had paint, so were juss hopp'd up fish'in mota'z....Mine were oval port, with higher porting than tha 200's...Mine had a non painted, crossdrill'd , 5 peddle manifold.....My Mod VP didn't have anythang in tha freeze plug on top, unlike tha 200's...One ov my Mod VP's had made a stop over at Jr. Eaves, so I reely kan't say wher it started!!....Mercury did a lot ov differnt thangz when involved it tha race'in thang....Factory boyz got stuff tha normal racers couldn't git, and after it wuz over, or sumpth'in new kame out, thoze "Special one ov a kind" motas filtered out in to tha main streem.....Juss say'in!!

The "special" factory 2.4 Mod-VP motors that only a few got started in 1980 with the big booster port non finger port 2.4`s with the large front half. There was 14 of those built and like T-Rex said they filtered out when the finger port motor was released. Thats when we got one of the 14. It wouldn`t run with the next gen special motors tho. Next was the bridge port`s then mother Merc took the rules back to "stock" block`s and stock depended on who you were. These motors also were non painted. Basicly a fishin motor with bolt on`s. After that`s when the 2.4`s went away and the 2.5`s came out.

So depending on the year you could have one of several 2.4 Mod-VP motors.

The one we purchased in late 84 was unpainted, with a plastic drop on cowl and aluminum flywheel. It had carbs with slosh tubes, 2L 2 piece heads, 5 petal single stage fiber reeds, and a cross drilled manifold. It also had higher oval ports. Strangely, the powerhead was on a 2 piece exhaust adapter plate (with solid mounts), a drilled bass type mid section, and had a LU with an epoxy nose cone but standard fishing water inlets. All of this was what I saw when we removed it from the crate, totally stock.
Added a pic of the cowling taken in 1985
