Motor boggs, EGT drops....fuel or fire?
It normally only happens in a left turn, but sometimes in choppy water.
It sounds like it is flooding, so I dropped the float levels down to even with the bowl, but it still does it.
When it runs good, it runs great....it doesnt seem to happen anywhere below 5000 RPM's. unless its a left Bat Turn... (turning around sharply)
It happens in a long sweeping left hand turn, or if I do a Bat Turn to the left.....never seems to happen while turning right, neither in a sweeper, or a Bat Turn....
Usually it is just the right EGT needle that drops, but sometimes the left needle will drop some too....it will burble a little, then come back to life in a few seconds, and run fine again.....
It doesn't feel like a lose of fire, (as in just dieing out), but more of a flooding type feel....then it feels like it clears, and comes back to life in a gradual manner...
Any ideas?
compression is good.
Running WH-15's with 88 mains, (same set up for over 100 hours)
Thanks for any ideas...JOHN MASON

Oh, and I cranked the fuel pressure down to about 3-4 psi.. still does it..
I put in brand new needles and seats around 100 hours ago.
It has foam floats in the bowls....should I swap those out with some plastic floats from another set of carbs I have? (I'm still leanin' towards fuel, huh) ?
also, I can go full left turn "at idle", with no type of cut out or stumble....(makes me think its not a wire) ?JOHN MASON

Well my fren...Sounds ta me like ya got a fuel delivery problem!!....See which side ov tha fuel tank tha pickup iz on, and go from ther...Does it do it with a full tank??...Deos it git worse az ya burn down tha content of tha gas tank??......I kin see tha "splash" in a bat turn, but not a gradule turn....
Also, check ya fuel lines....I had sorta tha same problem on my 380 once, and it drove me crazy...it would only starve for fuel when I turnd to tha right, and tha harder I turned, tha worse it got till it would die.....I did everthang wit no solution...Finally one ov my ole OB Guru buddies toll me to change tha fuel line fromt tha tank to tha mota...It fix'd my problem!!!....I disected that fuel line and found nutt'in but bubble(sorta) in tha inside layer ov rubber.....Juss anuther sumpth'in ta thank about

Mike, I keep my tank full all the time....(18 gallons), and usually only burn 5 or 6 gallons on a trip....its rare for me to burn the tank low.
The gradual turn is kinda sharp, and I hold it for 120 + degrees or so, I go around it about 50- 60 MPH...and it gets tighter at the last part of the turn....(usually where it starts to bog out)
The fuel lines are around 100 hours old also....(I changed ALL that stuff, when Ethanol was all I could get)...
It sounds like you are leaning towards a lean condition instead of flooding?
Wouldn't the EGT's go UP if it was lean?
Thanks for giving this one a look Mike....I need all the ideas I can get..JOHN MASON

I kinna miss'd tha part about tha EGT's dropp'in...U rite, it should go UP in a leen condition....U may try sum Baffels in tha bowls...Also drop tha float level to the "Shelf", and kick tha pressure up to 5 1/2 or 6#s!!!...That float level and float sett'in solved a bog problem I had out tha hole when I run tha WH-22's on tha BP!!

I'll put my money on the floats (at least 3 or 4 cents). Probably got a couple there getting heavy, and can't maintain the correct needle opening.

gotta be floats.....or needles and seats?...I can crank the fuel pressure up to 5 psi, and fuel shoots out of the little tube in the bottom of the top port carb....
I can crank the fuel pressure regulator down to about 2-1/2 psi and it slows down to a drip....I can take the fuel pressure screw all the way out of the regulator, and still have 2-1/2 psi at the dash gauge...
I guess I will put a set of plastic floats in there tonight and give that a try...JOHN MASON

Check the needles real close, if your eyes are anything like mine a magnifying glass helps.

Any wear on the needles like groove worn around tip from where it contacts the seat.

The needles look fine in the top carbs, (the one that was pouring fuel out)...I removed the foam floats, and replaced them with the plastic ones from another carb.....so far, with the fuel pump running in the garage, there is no fuel poring, (or dripping) out now......(with 5 psi of fuel pressure)
I weighed the foam floats, and one weighted 10 grams, and the other weighed 14 grams......the plastic ones weigh 7 grams each.
I'm gonna put it in the river and give it a test run today....JOHN MASON

that solved the problem !!......hard sweeping left turns....no bog.....hard left hand Bat Turn.....no bog.....
I do see the right side EGT drop a little on a left hand turn, but I don't feel any bog....I still need to swap out the floats on the other two carbs....that may fix the EGT drop....but so far, it runs good now....Last edited by WATERWINGS; 12-31-2011 at 09:07 PM.
