Johnson 50 upgraded to 115 merc inline six
I just bought an 85 merc 115 to put on my 16ft kitson craft. I had a 71 Johnson 50 on it and it would run 32mph gps. My question is that they both have 17 pitch props. what could i run on the merc? people think im nuts to put a tower of power on such a small boat but i say go fast or go home!

sure you can run that pitch prop as long as you don't over-rev it and hurt the engine. (get a tach)

How much hp is the boat rated for?
If I knew it was going to last this long I would have taken better care of it.

Good luck with the boat, a 17p should be a rocket out of the hole, and as stated above get a tach and don't spin its guts out for long periods of time. A 21 should net you high 50s, maybe even 60s, just be safe and make sure all your mechanicals are in good shape. A foot throttle, kill switch, dual cable steering, and a secure life jacket are good things to have also.
You're on the wrong site if you think anyone cares what the HP rating says.> Stainless steel Merc cowling plates - $110 shipped TYD - LINK <

What KG4 said!
I had a 115 on a skeeter wrangler. 21 would be the way to go for starters.
17 Noooooooooooooo!

Should be interesting! Be sure to wear your life jacket and kill switch! A friend of mine had a boat similar to that with a 125 johnson. When you tried to push it and go fast it would shove the nose down and start plowing. It would dart all over the place. May have not had any trim in it , I really know nothing about the set up or lack of. Be Careful!

You will most likely have more power than you can handle unless you spend a small fortune on good props solid mounts and dual cable steering. Or hydro steer.
Get a tach for sure. They sell for as little as 29 bucks sometimes on ebay. You set up should handle a 21 prop easily if you not flying the boat. If you get set up correct and start packing air a 24 small ear chopper would run you up into the 60's
