carb problem early 80s evinrude 115

rebuilt the carbs(cleaned installed new floats set to level with the carb body, new seats and needle and new gaskets) on my evinrude 115 and put them back on. i'm having a problem with spit back through one carb throat on only one cylinder. i removed the carbs and removed the intake manifold to check the reads and the are all there and look to be in good condition. the only thing i noticed is one reed valve is just slightly lifted off the reed block just by a hair. i would think that crankcase pressure would force it shut. should the reeds be against the reed blocks tight and flush?

what would cause spitting through the carbs?

Check and see if both carb butterflys are closed, if ones open could cause a problem, Jeff

both butterflies are closed but the jets are all screwed up. i took the jets out and i have 69 high speed 30 mids and 28 idle jets on 1 3/16 carbs.

The early 80's 140 hp crossflow carbs generally came with .067 main jets, but they were large throat carbs: either 1 5/16" carb or 1 3/8". Those small throat 1 3/16" carbs probably came with .060 main jets. Likely they are overfueling a lot with .069 jets.

I don't know what year stuff...but I ran into the bowl prob. A bit of junk at the base of the reed can hold it open. If that cly is spitting could be the problem.

Is this an idle spit or constant through the range ?

An idle spit is sometimes caused by lean condition. The idle jets are [dry] air bleeds, located at the top front of each barrel venturi. Maybe you have a blockage of one or more, remove and inspect each one and blow compressed air through each vent in housing, and jet. check for size #thanks.
