only run hot when at idle , mercury XR4

This 15o hp XR4 only runs hot at idle , At cruise runs cool , tried almost everything. complete impeller kit and housing, new poppet kit, new thermostats . pulled and checked exhaust plate looked ,fine no junk in water passages , timing rite on 5 after top dead center at idle and 21 before top dead center for wide open timing . carbs rebuilt run perfect- but has always had this idle over heat problem since i bought the boat , did notice water impeller i replaced that was only 5 months old looked like it was hard and had got hot since rubber ears was folded over and the rubber was hard not soft , engine is always ran in a tank not rabbit ears and never ran with out water . has great water pressure at idle but notice piss water is hot real soon after starting it cold . wondering if there is a blockage in the heads or maby head gasket or blockage some were else in engine . all advice would be a blessing lol

If you have a leaking head gasket will push some compression in water and cause steam pocket which can make it run warm or blockage in devider plate ---also ck and see if water deverters are in block between cylinder liners

I was thinking the same thing has to be a head gasket or something inside the block . thanks

I would suspect the rubber pc. that goes under the powerhead that the water tube slips into.. If the water supply tube is leaking it would be hot at idle and be ok when water flow increases with speed and rpm. You have the same type of rubber part in the waterpump housing where the copper tube slips in. Have to pull powerhead to check, but seems you have checked everything else.

Is this seal you speak of round and about 12" long?

When you pulled out the divider you would see a section of the divider that goes down into the block. That long rubber strip goes at the bottom of that cavity that seperates the right and left bank. Not real sure what effect that could have on motor.

Rock thanks ' yes its that seal your talking about , sure read a lot of over heating problems on these xr4 outboards . its just a mind twister trying to figure out why it runs cool when out running on the water but slowly climes to hot when idling . only thing when in water tub at shop or with rabbit ears at idle the water pissing out is really hot and is hot just when the pisser starts pissing when the stats open and just gets hotter the longer it runs . I see a lot of mods done to these but the mod mostly seems for iver heating at higher rpm not idle . .

I have ran into this before. What I found is the water pump was not installed perfectly and it was get sucking in air and the block was filled with air and water mixed not just water only. But in a tank and submerged I dont see how thats happening but anyway that is what I found on one brought to my shop... After an complete water pump kit not just impeller it fixed that one! Just my .02
