1991 2.5L EFI 14 petal motors banned from many production dragracing rules?

...is it a durability thing? Are these engines an unfair advantage? Seems like they could regulate them by adding weight instead of outright banning them if it was an advantage thing. I don't think I have ever seen one particular year of a common motor banned from any kind of racing anywhere else except production drag boat, even rotary engines have multipliers for weight depending on mods made to allow them to compete against piston engines in auto racing.

    What am I missing?

    Hmmm. That's what I have. 1991 mfg. Date, I thought it was a 1992 model year. 14 petal, 260EFI.
What sanctioning body? I have been tempted to run with some guys up here in the UMPBA.

Check out DSRA rules, specifically bans the 1991 14 petal motors in production racing.

Yes. They're not allowed in some classes. It's much easier to outlaw them then trying to figure out exactly what weight to make it equal to the 5 petal motor. Inevitably if someone won with a 7 petal motor the others would be crying foul so its much easier to cut them out. There's not that many out there so its really not an issue. Plenty of 5 petal motors available

This motor is basicaly a 225 promax block. Large exaust, 7 petal unlike the 200hp now.
But same as the 240 sportjet.

It's another name for a reed. Most have reed cages with 5 reeds, or petals. A few years had 7 reeds. So basically 7 holes to breathe in through instead of 5 for each cylinder. Look up 7 petal front half and you can see pics.

1991 200 was a seven petal carb motor. bottom guided rods, small exhaust, exhaust relieved ports. it is nothing like a promax. and imo a five petal motor will out run it in everything except very light all out race boat.

Agreed. The mythical “91 7 petal 200” will get its lunch packed by a 97-99 five petal 200
