AE-21 help
picked up a 89 AE-21 with a 91 225 Yamaha,boat looks great and is solid,drove around ,great ride and feel,couple of questions?
top speed is 74 mph gps and 5500 rpm,is that right?
- has a 26 p chopper prop
- what is max rpm on that engine?
-it has dual cable steering, was thinking on a Hydrolic system?

Looks nice! I looked up the gear ratio on the Yamaha and it showed 1.81:1. If that is correct, at 5500 with a 26p if you are getting 74mph, your slip would be 1%. That is not possable so since you said GPS speed we should be able to trust that. Check your lower ratio by putting it in gear, marking the prop position and turning the flywheel to see if it is 1.8 turns to make 1 turn on the prop. If that is correct then your prop has been pitched up or your tach is reading low. Hydraulic steering reduces the torque steer and is much smoother. It's not cheap but once you have had a boat with it it is hard to go back to cable.
Here is what I found on that engine:
Motor Specs
Manufacturer: Yamaha
Year: 1991
Horsepower: 225.0
Cylinders: 6
Type: 2 stroke
Gear Ratio: 1.81:1
Min WOT RPM: 5000
Max WOT RPM: 6000
Spline Count: 15
Drive Type: Outboard

I'm running a 1991 AE-21 with a Merc 2.5/200, 12" of setback, hyd. jackplate,CLE gearcase, Tempest Plus 25 into the 80's on GPS. You should be able to get more than 5500 rpm out of that motor. What's your propshaft height compared to the pad?? How much setback are you running. The AE-21/HST bottoms like to run flat; they don't require alot of trim. Feel free to contact me anytime. I'm still dialing in my AE-21!! Steve

Apexfx, I was just reviewing your pictures. You need more setback and a hyd. jackplate. Adding hyd. steering would also be nice but do it after you increase your setback so you'll know what length hoses you'll need for the hyd. steering. With more motor height and setback you'll be able to get more RPM's out of the Yamaha and pick up top end speed.

I would think you're going to need a nosecone/low water pickup before you start raising that motor too far. The gear ratio should be a 1.86:1 and if you cut the limiter they'll pull pretty good until about 6500 in stock form. Those motors were also designed to run premium fuel...

Nice purchase, pretty sure that boat has extremely low hours. Where are you going to run it?
As mentioned, it probably has another 10 mph in set up in it.
I believe there are a few owners on www.fastboatscanada.com too. Might be worth joining.Allison XB02, 22ft Tritoon 225 4 stroke, two seadoo sparks

I thought the 2.6L Carb 225's did have the 1.81:1 ratio (?) I don't think they have to have premium either. This was just a bass motor (actually, it didn't even get the louvered cowl, mounts and "Pro V" badging) so it wasn't even touted as a "bass" motor. Put some HT 8200 heads on her and she will need some premium. :-)

Darth...this was the top of the line back then. The 225 evolved from the Excel and had the second generation computer controlled ignition. It has more agressive porting and staggered compression over the ProV...along with the fact that it was a horizontal reed motor versus a vertical reed. They basically got all the best 2.6 parts.
They are 1.86:1 and they do run best on premium...they don't HAVE to have it because of the knock sensor but it'll pull timing and you'll loose performance. The HydroTec heads are probably a waste with that ignition since it'll probably start pulling timing unless you dump a TON of fuel in it.
The motor under the HPDI cowling in my signature picture is the same motor (but it's a 1990)....
Darth how do you like the TRP lower??? I've got one but never tried it...'08 SRV

Great purchase. Love the AE's. I agree that more setback will eventually help, but for sure with a cone and LWP. I'm running 15" of setback on my HST. Don't try to run a ton of motor height and a lot of positive trim without more setback though. I found out the hard way on my Venus/Yamaha 200 that it will run the lower hot and cook seals, and filler. Also, open up the water scoop and passage from the cavitation plate to the mid to get it to run cooler. Let me know if you have any questions, I had a heck of a time finding this out.

You hit the nail on the head!!! They like to run flat!!!! Gotta get that motor height right, and have neutral trim at top end... I was amazed at how my HST felt like it caught second gear at about 90-95,,, and then it quickly got over 100!!!! I had 18" setback!!!!! What!!!!!! Balzy helped me out a lot with my setup...107 was the best with little setup time... A lot of people told me I would never get it over 100...... I showed em on the gps!!!!
